Sweet Star™ Gardenia
Fast Growing New Gardenia Makes a Great Hedge
Check this new selection with its super tight rounded outline and classic deep, dark and shiny green leaves. Classic Gardenia foliage is as elegant as the other selections and the perfect background to show off the pure white flowers.
Sweet Star gets a gold star for flower power. Unusual, single flowers with 6 distinctly separated petals that give this Gardenia a whole new look. Typically, Gardenia plants tend to throw flowers in late summer and early fall. Sweet Star differs from other Gardenia selections in that it just bombards you with flowers! The fragrance is amazing and this may sound cliché, but it really is intoxicating.
Another interesting attribute for Sweet Star is the interesting orange fruit that is produced after the flowers. A mass of white lasts for months and then before fall comes the fruit adds interest in a whole new season.
For a Gardenia, Sweet Star is a fast-growing plant eventually gets to about 3-4’ tall and can spread a bit more with age. An acid soil and a sunny exposure with some protection from the hot afternoon sun will benefit the plants greatly. Hardiness is rated for zones 7-9. There are some rumors that this plant can work into zone 6b making this one of the hardiest Gardenias around.
Sweet Star Gardenias makes outstanding hedge plants, magnificent foundation plants, and certainly plants to keep up close and personal to enjoy the flowers and fragrance. Gardenia hedges add structure to the garden and can be used to encase cottage gardens, rose gardens, or your favorite perennials.
