This plant will have you saying, "Come over, Red Rover!" all year! Really, this plant has it all. It's sure to please you, your neighbors, songbirds, and pollinators. The Proven Winners® ColorChoice® Red Rover® Dogwood (Cornus obliqua 'Powell Gardens') (sometimes going by Cornus amomum subsp. obliqua 'Powell Gardens') will keep your garden lively as the seasons change!

The Red Rover® Dogwood sprouts clusters of star-shaped white flowers that attract pollinators like beneficial insects, bees, and butterflies all spring! Not only does the Red Rover® Dogwood grow leaves that you'll love, but it produces blue berries in the fall that keep the songbirds singing and full. They won't be the only wildlife that stops by this unique plant.

If your garden is aching for some autumnal excitement, the Red Rover® Dogwood will provide you with unparalleled color and excitement when fall arrives. This plant is also a great way to keep the winged wildlife in your area happy through summer and fall.

This native Silky Dogwood is well known for its narrow lance-shaped leaves that celebrate green in the spring and turn yellow, red, and maroon in the fall. These multi-dimensional leaves create quite a display of color when fall comes around! Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 4 to 8, these smaller shrubs fill out into a rounded 4-5 foot tall and wide form!

Planting and Application:

So, what do you do with such a versatile and manageable plant? A row of Red Rover® Dogwoods makes a great screening hedge or native backdrop to a perennial border. Plant this hardy beauty where you want to add exquisite color and keep a camera nearby to snap a few pictures when the songbirds stop by for a snack! Brighten a mixed-shrub border, add some pizzazz to a foundation border, or add pops of winter color throughout the landscape!

Dogwoods politely create naturalized thickets and wildlife-friendly groves, filling areas with lovely foliage and color for privacy and property definition! Plant on a hillside or slope to control erosion and fast rainwater and they also work well in tough Rain Garden or bioswale situations. Because it grows well in damp soil, it earned the nickname "Swamp Dogwood" and was often planted in wet meadows and floodplains.

  • White Flower Clusters For Pollinators

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Silky Dogwoods are tolerant of partial shade, however, for redder stems and good fall leaf color, full sun is best. Best grown in organically rich, medium to wet soils in full sun to part shade. Red Rover® is tolerant of a wide range of soils, including swampy or boggy conditions. Provide moderate moisture throughout the year and especially during drought.

Mulch with a layer 3 to 4 inches deep to 3 feet outside of the canopy to ensure the root stays cool in the hot summer. Increase water during dry extreme heat. In the fall, prune the beautiful red stems for your Holiday containers or renewal prune your shrub by trimming out only the thick, old stems down to ground level every 3-5 years to leave the young stems in place to bloom and fruit with abandon.

  • Loves Full Sun but Can Grow in Partial Shade
  • Adaptable to Wet & Dry Soils
  • Can Grow in Wet or Dry Conditions
  • Seldom Damaged by Deer & Extraordinarily Cold Hardy
  • Prune In Late Winter/Early Spring
