Penstemon Margarita BOP

Availability: Out of stock

Margarita BOP Penstemon (Penstemon heterophyllus 'Margarita BOP') was discovered in California by Bert Wilson, as a chance seedling that was growing at the bottom of his porch. He claims that he never watered it or maintained it and that his kids with their bikes, their skateboards, and their dogs trampled it many times. It still kept on coming back every year and blooming its intense true blue blooms until some repairs on the house were being done and two inches of concrete was poured on top of it by mistake. That finally did it in. Go figure!

Thankfully Bert was able to get seeds from it and propagate it and now we can offer this great plant to you! It is related to native Beardtongue and is as hardy as Bert claims it to be!

Soil, sunlight, and water can all change the color of Margarita BOP from year to year, but it will always stay in the palette of royal blues and purple, and magenta, often mixed in the same flower! It is a true beauty and you'll love having it in your garden.

Oh, and that name - BOP? It stands for 'Bottom of Porch', exactly where Bert found it!

Planting and Application:

This is a super-hardy plant that looks like a million bucks without any coddling necessary! Blooming from spring to mid-summer, Margarita BOP is a fantastic Perennial and Cottage border plant, thrives in the sunny container garden, and really dresses up a pollinator border or cut flower garden with bountiful multi-hued blooms!

Vibrant and low-maintenance when used in xeriscaping, en mass, and along sunny pathways, go ahead and use them as showy border plants! The swaths of color are in contrast to the delicate-looking blooms! But these hardy, compact and smaller-sized perennials are fast-growing plants that are drought-tolerant once established, making them perfect for Fire-wise landscaping and Rock gardening.

  • Royal Blues, Purple, Magenta & Pinks!
  • Tall Wands of Tubular Blooms
  • Bees, Butterflies & Hummingbirds Love It
  • Very Easy Care Mounds of Green Foliage
  • Rock Gardens, Perennial & Cottage Borders & Cut Flowers

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Penstemon are herbaceous perennials and flower best in full sun but also do well in part sun and afternoon shade. Very heat tolerant throughout USDA growing zones 6 through 10, Beardtongue loves sparse, well-drained soil and doesn't need a lot of attention to keep it looking its best! Provide regular moisture access throughout their first year, but once established, these are wonderfully drought-tolerant and waterwise, and perfect for Fire-wise landscaping! Mulch around their crowns well and deadhead them to tidy up the mounds in fall. Trim all foliage down late fall after frost, and divide every few years to maintain the vigor of the crown.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Average to Low Fertility
  • Well-Drained Soil & Appreciates Mulch
  • Regular to Low Moisture
  • Drought-Tolerant Once Established
  • Deer & Rabbit-Resistant

Vivid multi-hue blooms and tough-as-nails perseverance, the Margarita BOP Penstemon will be your new favorite perennial! Hurry and order this fantastic Beardtongue for your garden, vases, and pollinators today at!
