Maiden grass, Miscanthus sinensis, is noted for its rounded, arching clump of foliage, and is one of the easiest plants to add to your landscape. These grasses are beautiful, easy to grow, carefree, and provide year round interest. No wonder ornamental grasses have increased in popularity! They provide variety, beauty and low maintenance. Maiden grass needs adequate sunlight and moist, well-drained soil; once established, however, it is quite drought tolerant.
Maiden grass is on its best behavior during the summer months when it has attained its full growth. At this time it creates an amazing display of color with eye-catching seed heads in gorgeous hues: copper, silver, cream or gold. This year-round landscape plant mixes well with colorful perennials. Since Maiden grasses come in various sizes, make sure you choose a flowering perennial that complements the grass in size, color and shape. Remember to give all plants room to spread so they don’t become overcrowded. Cut the grass down to 4-6 inches, or divide, in late fall or early spring. Maiden grass has become a “beginner gardener’s” delight!
