Citrusy sweet white blossoms, the Natchez Mock Orange (Philadelphus 'Natchez') is a showy fountain-shaped shrub that blooms abundantly in spring with sensational 2-inch single, fragrant white flowers among the beautiful green foliage, swarmed in butterflies and bees!
Also spelled Mockorange, this tough, disease-resistant shrub requires little maintenance and is easy to grow. It forms a broad, well-branched shrub at maturity and is extremely hardy, cold-resistant, pest and disease-free! The branches are covered with fresh green foliage for a nice effect even when not in flower throughout the growing season!
Fast-growing and tolerant after it is established, Natchez is cold hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 to 8. Growing to a tall 6-8 feet in height and 5-6 feet in width, these are sizeable shrubs that fill a large area with fragrant beauty! This durable shrub even tolerates salty breezes. Mock Orange is even pollution tolerant!
Mock Orange has many uses in the landscape and it's especially enjoyable when grown near a walkway, patio, or driveway where one can enjoy its beauty and fragrance. Plant one by your front door to perfume your welcome home, or around your back seating and entertainment areas.
It shines in spring and holds its rich green leaves densely through the summer as a lovely accent. Use it as a low-growing screening plant. It also boosts springtime interest when planted on the sunny side of taller evergreens. Use blooming ornamentals in a high-profile location. You and your guest will enjoy the fragrance during the spring and early summer bloom.
They love wind, so try them on the open prairie or on windswept hillsides. Use these fragrant shrubs in urban plantings, as well. Try a long row of them across the front of a busy sidewalk for a friendly privacy fence. Use one on either side of a special Garden Room or grow several together as a fragrant hedge, and look great when kept as an untrimmed, informal, free-form hedge.
Natchez needs full sun for the best bloom, so provide a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight a day. Follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Mock Orange shrubs thrive just about anywhere, including slightly acidic, slightly alkaline, sandy soil, or heavy clay. Although widely adapted to many different soil types, Mock Orange requires well-drained soil. The roots won't tolerate wet locations. Once the plant is well established in your soil, it can tolerate short periods of drought, but not for long. Add a nice, thick layer of mulch all around to three feet outside the shrub. 3-4 inches of mulch helps your plant maintain surface moisture and keep roots cool. However, mulch should never touch the main stems of your plant.
Once the flowering is done, you can prune them back, to keep a nice, clean look. You can do this hard pruning every year, or less often. Don't be surprised to see reblooming in mid to late summer. Mock Orange can be renewal pruned, or cut to the ground in late winter to rejuvenate the plant.
