Stars and Stripes for your garden!

Lucerne Grass, (Sisyrinchium angustifolium 'Lucerne') is a herbaceous perennial that produces lovely lavender flowers. This adorable little "grass" will enchant you with Iris-like foliage and petite, yellow-eyed, lavender blossoms.

The delicate blooms will peek out at you amid the foliage from May until June and provide a vibrant-green, fast carpet of foliage. The centers of each bloom have a bright yellow center and the blooms of this ornamental grass have branched flowering stems.

Variety of North American Native selection, is native to Missouri where it occurs in damp open woods, slopes, and along stream banks throughout much of the State. It is a clump-forming perennial that features a tuft of lovely green.

Growing up to a foot a year, the strappy, blue-green leaves create lovely upright foliage, Lucerne are hardy plants for a wide range of growing zones and climates.

How to Use Lucerne Grass In The Landscape

Plant several of Lucerne in a naturalized area of your landscape for a splash of color in spring. Creating wonderful groundcover in very little time and filling in between your perennial beds. A rock garden is always a welcome place for Lucerne Grass.

Excellent for edging or the front of mixed borders, these line and define your garden beds with upright texture! The star-shaped flowers in lavender-blue to violet-blue fill in that early summer blooming period with lovely hued color.

Wonderful in containers, these provide great upright form and texture fringing the patios, and the sword-like foliage looks lovely planted en masse. The fine roots are excellent at stabilizing slopes and stopping erosion.

With some drought tolerance once established, Lucerne also adapts equally well to rain gardens and occasionally soggy soils. Plant near where the gutters drain or simply allow it to naturalizing meadows and hard to mow hillsides.

Your Lucerne Grass is especially valued for its vertical nature, a perfect addition for tight spaces where you don't want something that bumps shoulders with other plantings. Best naturalized in informal garden areas such as cottage gardens, woodland gardens, wild edges or native plant areas. Also effective in border fronts, and as an edger for paths or walkways.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Lucerne Grass has a clump-forming nature and is adaptive to a variety of soils and conditions. Preferring any moist well-drained soils, Lucerne is in the Iris family and prefers the same conditions as its taller, bearded cousins.

Loving both the full sun and part shade, Lucerne Grass tends to be maintenance-free and quite hardy, so you won't have to spend time and effort to reap its exceptional rewards.

Water regularly and do not let dry out between waterings, ore more while in extreme heat or containers. Deer and rabbit resistant, only the pollinators will be visiting your garden!

Pruning shouldn't be any problems and Lucerne is not as vigorously self-seeding as the native plants can. Plantings may be cut back after the blooms are finished to avoid any unwanted self-seeding and/or to tidy foliage for the remaining portion of the year.

Many popular perennials are large and ostentatious, but Lucerne Grass proves that you don't have to be big in size to make a big impression in the garden. Add a few Lucerne Grass to your yard this year and you'll soon see why this little gem is considered a big value.
