This diminutive mounded shape is perfect for today's smaller landscapes. You can even grow them in large containers on your patio or entryway. One on either side makes a memorable display flanking the doorway.
This variety has been called the Best Lilac for containers. Decorate your patio or porch with a sophisticated series of matching containers. Or mix it up with a fun and funky collection of individual pots for a personal touch.
En masse and in rows amplifies the impact of the blooms Wonderblue has on your property! Repeat them across the back of your mixed borders or use as compact flowering privacy screens, or include it in foundation plantings.
Lilacs are easy-care, long-lived and Wonderblue loves sun, sun, sun! Wonderblue can take a place in all day sun. However, it is unique that it will tolerate a few hours of afternoon shade and still flower! Flower production is best in a planting site that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.
The morning sun is best for drying the leaves. Wonderblue's foliage does show improved resistance to powdery mildew, but why take chances? Air circulation is also important for Lilacs to perform at their best. When planting, please avoid low spots or heavily enclosed locations that trap airflow. Far better to find a place where the breezes can blow all the way through the branches.
Water your Wonderblue Lilac regularly, but do not overwater. It requires good soil drainage, so if you see puddles that remain long after a rainfall, mound up when planting. Bring additional soil in and heap it up 18 high. You'll plant directly in that mound. Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer, following directions on the package.
Give your plants an annual layer of mulch. It's best to completely cover the root system with a 3-inch Mulch layer and spread it out 3 to 4 feet from the center of the plant. As a final step, be sure to pull the mulch away from the main stems by at least 2 inches.
Disease and deer-resistant so you'll be saved the time and trouble of dealing with costly measures to keep it safe from harm. If you live with deer in your area, apply repellent spray on planting day. Deer are hungry and curious, and you want to train them to leave your plants alone. Reapply according to the label.
Don't miss a single bloom! Follow these easy Pruning steps for the best flowering: You can easily maintain Wonderblue Lilac to any size. It will flower on old wood, so get out there just as soon as the flowers fade. Don't wait any longer, or you'll risk missing out on next year's blooms.
To rejuvenate older plants, you can take out several of the oldest, thickest stems by cutting them off at ground level. This will promote new growth from the base of the plant, which will flower beautifully for you.
