Craving Lilac scent but don’t have the room for a standard size variety? Try this cute, compact semi-dwarf variety on for size. Wonderblue Lilac (Syringa vulgaris 'Wonderblue') features excellent icy lavender flowers with a clear blue overcast.

With more compact branching, Wonderblue also grows a bit slower than other varieties. It will stay tidy and pretty for you, with a well-balanced rounded growth habit.

And have you seen the unique lavender blue flowers? You’ll smell their yummy scent all over the yard. No wonder Wonderblue’s popularity has skyrocketed since it was introduced.

Wonderblue is a cross of ‘Tiffany Blue’ and the Rochester Lilacs. It was hybridized by the dedicated and talented Father John Fiala. Nicknamed “Little Boy Blue”, this variety should be used just about anywhere you have full sun.

Hummingbirds and butterflies will appreciate the nectar source, and you’ll love the single sky-blue flowers which cover the plant in the late spring.

The fragrant blooms are excellent for cutting. Be sure to include these sturdy, sweet blooms in cut flower displays.

The diminutive mounded shape is perfect for today’s smaller landscapes. You can even grow them in large containers on your patio or entryway. One on either side makes a memorable display flanking the doorway.

Use this plant where you can see it and smell it. Wonderblue Lilac is refined enough to take center stage.

How to Use Wonderblue Lilac in the Landscape

A great flowering variety for all cold winter climates, Wonderblue can be used in many applications. Repeat them across the back of your mixed borders or use as compact flowering privacy screens.

You’ll love taking cuttings in the spring as the flower buds start to swell. Enjoy the fragrant burst of these astounding flowers in beautiful homegrown floral arrangements.

Because Wonderblue Lilac is very showy, it makes a wonderful specimen plant. Try it near the patio, garage door or include it in foundation plantings.

This variety has been called the “Best Lilac for Containers”. Decorate your patio or porch with a sophisticated series of matching containers. Or mix it up with a fun and funky collection of individual pots for a personal touch.

You’ll love this small shrub. Wonderblue Lilac is long on charm and delivers high impact performance!

#ProPlantTips for Care

Water your Wonderblue Lilac regularly, but do not overwater. It requires good soil drainage, so if you see puddles that remain long after a rainfall, “mound up” when planting. Bring additional soil in and heap it up 18” high. You’ll plant directly in that mound.

It loves sun, sun, sun! Wonderblue can take a place in all day sun. However, it will tolerate a few hours of afternoon shade and still flower. Flower production is best in a planting site that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight a day.

Morning sun is best for drying the leaves. Wonderblue’s foliage does show improved resistance to powdery mildew, but why take chances?

Air circulation is also important for Lilacs to perform at their best. When planting, please avoid low spots or heavily enclosed locations that trap air flow. Far better to find a place where the breezes can blow all the way through the branches.

Fertilize in early spring and again in mid-summer with Dr. Earth Organic and All Purpose Fertilizer following directions on the package.

Give your plants an annual layer of mulch. It’s best to completely cover the root system with a 3 inch mulch layer. Spread it out to 3 to 4 feet from the center of the plant. As a final step, be sure to pull the mulch away from the main stems by at least 2 inches to give it air circulation.

You can easily maintain Wonderblue Lilac to any size. It will flower on old wood, so get out there just as soon as the flowers fade. Don’t wait any longer, or you’ll risk missing out on next year’s blooms.

To rejuvenate older plants, you can take out several of the oldest, thickest stems by cutting them off at ground level. This will promote new growth from the base of the plant, which will flower beautifully for you.

Don’t miss this special plant in your yard. Order your Wonderblue Lilacs today!
