Lilac - Sarah Sands, 'Syringa vulgaris 'Sarah Sands', is a very common flowering shrub that grows best in a sunny location. The plant grows in shade but flowering is poor and powdery mildew is likely to occur. 'Sarah Sands' is a relatively late bloomer, producing single, dark wine-purple flowers. Place her near a white or light colored lilac for a stunning contrast! Its flower fragrance is stunning, and it is a very prolific bloomer. As with most other S. vulgaris cultivars, its leaves are heart-shaped medium-green in spring. Adaptable to nearly all soils, Sarah Sands prefers to be planted with compost/peat moss. Best to remove old flowers when finished blooming. This lilac is a good size for smaller areas and can easily be controlled.
