The Lilac 'Excel', Syringa x hycinthiflora 'Excel', is a compact branching Lilac with single, lilac-lavender flowers. Somewhat irregular in shape, this Lilac has leaves that are medium green, ovate to heart-shaped, up to 5 inches long. This free flowering hybrid is very fragrant and great for southern areas. 'Excel' grows in full sun and is heat tolerant; blooms from the late winter through early spring. The single purple flowered clusters put on a great display in the early season. The Lilac 'Excel' prefers regular water and good drainage, The following years' flower buds are produced by midsummer, so if pruning is necessary, do so before July. 'Excel makes an outstanding shrub border.
