Fetterbush - Curly Red, Leucothoe axillaris ‘Curly Red’ Dwarf PP#17,666, is an adorable little dwarf evergreen plant that is ideal for small spaces! Sometimes it is called Dog Hobble. Curly Red will give you different colors throughout the season with its unusual thick, leathery, and curling leaves! This creeping dwarf shrub begins with orange-red leaves, changes to green with bronze tips in summer, and then matures to an amazing deep burgundy red color in the fall; in early winter the leaves become purple! Curly Red is a fantastic woody plant that is very hardy and likes shady banks. It produces small red berries in October that persist through the winter. Use for mixed winter containers, as a ground cover, or foundation plantings. Curly Red prefers moist, acid, well-drained soil in partial shade, and can grow in full sun if kept moist. Select a site that is not windswept, and shaded to some degree; makes a good undergrowth plant that can hide "leggy" plants behind them.
