Argentea Variegata Sweet Iris

Availability: Out of stock

Gorgeous two-tone blooms and bi-color foliage, the Argentea Variegata Iris (Iris pallida 'Argentea Variegata') has striking ivory and green foliage that looks great with the classic pale and darker lavender-blue flowers with yellow beards that appear in the late spring and early summer! The highly fragrant flowers have a distinctive scent that is variously described as reminiscent of grape jelly, orange blossom, or vanilla!

The upright fan-shaped clumps of sword-like foliage shine long after those radiant flowers fade, stand strong, and add vertical texture to the landscape. These types of Sweet Iris are fragrant and showy! Gather the large blooms for an extraordinary indoor cut flower arrangement, or leave them outdoors for the many Butterflies and Bees that will arrive!

Also known as Dalmatian Iris, the low clumps of sword-like leaves remain nearly evergreen in mild winter climates, but in cold areas, the plant dies back to the ground as other Irises do. Hardy throughout USDA planting zones 3 to 10, they grow tall but won't spread wide, while remaining Deer and rabbit-resistant, hardy, and fast-growing.

Planting and Application:

These water-loving Iris are best used around pools, ponds, and water gardens, and for mass plantings with moist soil. Because of its space-saving size, place this Iris in the back of the garden border as a backdrop. Groupings maximize the incredible flower and foliage color combination!

These Sweet Iris can also be used on difficult banks to prevent erosion and stabilize soil. Any sun garden with high moisture access will be brighter with pastel blossoms and variegated foliage! That soggy area around the HVAC unit, around ponds and water features, or in Rain Gardens all gain a hardy water-loving showy perennial! Best used around pools, ponds, and water gardens!

Showy in the Cottage Garden, Pollinator Border, and throughout the average soil sun garden, groupings look fantastic in mixed Perennial gardens, winding among flowering shrubs and Roses, or with other upright growing perennials like Ornamental Grasses and sun-garden perennial plants! They look especially lovely among tall Lilies and other Iris!

#ProPlantTips For Care

This Iris isn't hard to grow and just needs a spot in full sun and well-drained soil. Your Iris needs plenty of water throughout the season to continue to look its best. It rewards consistent moisture by being useful in many ways. Consider adding a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and protect the roots. Deadhead the flowers as they fade and trim back the foliage in the autumn. Every 3-5 years, divide the clumps to keep them growing vigorously.

Information About Bare Root Iris

Plant Iris about 15-18 inches apart. Bare root Iris are shipped as nice fresh-cut divisions with two to three fans of green tops. Keep in mind each Iris variety can have slightly different-sized roots.

When planting, make sure 1/3rd of the rhizome is exposed to sunlight with the roots buried underneath. Note, that it's best to cover the rhizome with a thin layer of mulch or leaves to protect it during the coldest months but make sure to uncover them in the spring.
