Fantastic Foliage and Flowers Blue Shadow Fothergilla

  • Fragrant White Flowers
  • Icy Foliage
  • Vibrant Red Fall Color
  • Excellent Foundation Plant

With deep, cool, blue-green leaves, the Blue Shadow Fothergilla (Fothergilla major 'Blue Shadow') will add a shadowy and magical flair to your garden. This handsome plant is sometimes referred to as "Blue Shadow Witch Alder". It produces sweet-scented flowers and offers striking fall foliage.

This Fothergilla variety is a cultivar of the Mt. Airy Fothergilla.

The Blue Shadow Fothergilla is admired for its abundant feathery flowers. These blooms seem to lift their fluffy heads and celebrate all that spring has to offer. This show is made more spectacular by the fact that these flowers appear before any of its leaves have a chance to sprout. So, you wind up with naked branches covered in joyous bottlebrush puffs!

These spritely flowers appear atop a plethora of spikes. And these bottle-brush style white blooms smell like sweet, sweet honey. These attractive flowers are dainty but demur. They have a touch of yellow and a bright green center to add a little excitement to a sleepy garden.

Soon after flowering, the Blue Shadow Fothergilla erupts with its distinctive leaves. This icy-hued plant often appears iridescent in the sunshine. Its dull, matte leaves are finely lobed and look bluish-gray throughout spring. As fall arrives, they redden and glow vibrant yellow to orange or crimson in the sun.

Plant this dazzling shrub as a border or low but attractive hedge for year-round interest. It offers a mounded growth habit and will spread if allowed, which makes it a great choice for mass plantings. It also thrives in extremely wet conditions, so it will do well in those that are areas too damp for other plants to grow. The Blue Shadow Fothergilla looks at home in a woodland garden, too.

For the most prolific flowers and healthiest Blue Shadow Fothergilla, provide it with wet soil that drains well and water it at least weekly. This plant loves the sun but will also grow well in moderate shade. If you prune it back in later winter, you'll be rewarded with robust new growth.

Don't miss out on this shadowy figure that will gift your garden with an attractive icy blue. The Blue Shadow Fothergilla is a sweetly scented, excellent addition to any garden, so don't miss out!
