The stunning Flameleaf Sumac Bush (Rhus copallinum) is a tough native that turns into smoking-hot shades of orange and red! When the sun shines through the leaves, the foliage glows like hot coals.

The compound leaves have stems with a distinctive wing between the leaflets. Forming beautifully rounded and upright shrubs, these fall color shrubs carry an imposing sight in the autumn garden. Thicket-forming and spreading, they provide dense cover and shelter for birds and wildlife!

Often forming an airy open shrub, suckering colony, or multi-stemmed tree form (with pruning). Either way, Flameleaf Sumac has an elegant multi-branched structure and can be trained into a very pleasing canopy with ease!

Your local wildlife will enjoy Sumac for different reasons! Native bees and beneficial insects visit the summer flowers which are impressive dense panicles, held in upright fluffy spires from July to September.

Members of the Cashew family (Anacardiaceae) these deciduous shrubs are predominant natives in the United States and have incredibly colorful foliage all growing season in addition to their unique flower and songbird-friendly.seed pods! Try making your own Sumacade from the berry-like drupes to make the aforementioned tangy drink!

Planting and Application:

The nearly Palm-like tropical look of the foliage while they sway in the breeze. Often living 30-50 years in optimal conditions, plant banks or rows of these impressive plants act as unique screening and specimen plantings!

Flameleaf Sumac is an ideal choice when used along the edge of a woodland area or as a crown jewel in the Rock Garden! Use these gorgeous native shrubs as borders, airy hedges, or as foundation plants in your garden! Wonderful erosion control and are great for slowing water runoff on slopes and hard-to-mow hillsides.

These trees and shrubs are dioecious, meaning that they develop male and female flowers on separate plants, and only the female plants produce the fruit. This makes groupings ideal so you have a great mix of shrubs for pollination. The fiery fall display is the biggest reason for wanting to plant this gorgeous shrub everywhere!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Sumac shrubs preferred growing conditions are full sun, while other Sumac varieties handle partial shade. But all of them do best in well-drained soil and will even thrive in poor, rocky soil. Sumacs are tolerant of slightly acid soil conditions and soil textures ranging from coarse to fine, preferring anything well-drained. Easy-to-care-for, tough-as-nails, and drought-tolerant once established, Sumac are very low-maintenance!

Provide Nature Hills Root Booster for lifelong symbiotic support and a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over the soil to insulate the roots and hold moisture. Prune your Sumac in late winter or very early spring for shape and size if needed. You can also try renewal pruning by removing a third of the oldest growth every 3-5 years. Mow or trim back suckers if they are not desired each year.

  • Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Moist Well-Drained Soil or Occasionally Dry
  • Tolerates Salt & Coastal Conditions
  • Fire Resistant & Drought-Tolerant Once Established
  • Generally Pest & Disease-Free
  • Prune in Late Winter
