Rock Star Hips of the First Editions® Red Star Hypericum

  • Yellow Star Flowers
  • Red Orange Hips
  • Deer Resistant
  • Pollinator Friendly

Showy Spring clusters of yellow, star-shaped flowers become red orange Fall berries on the First Editions® Red Star Hypericum (Hypericum inodorum 'Kolmarest' PP 21,313).

Through the Summer, the profusion of flowers are borne at the tips of contrasting red stems on the 2.5 foot rounded shrub.

This variety is considered deciduous and semi-evergreen, as they typically stay green in warm climates, but will show some Fall yellowing in cooler areas of the country where leaves turn color for the Autumn show.

The Red Star St. John's Wort variety was bred specifically for the florist industry for use of the cut red-orange berries (hips) in various arrangements. However, these shrubs will be just as happy and purposeful when growing in your yard!

Try planting them along a sunny border, mixed with other shrub varieties, along foundations, or in your cutting garden.

Plant them where you can see them, as they will attract pollinators, like butterflies and hummingbirds. Luckily, Deer tend to avoid this variety.

Full sun will produce the most flowers and fruit, along with well drained soils, but this shrub will also tolerate part shade.

It's best to trim in early spring as flowers are born on new growth. In colder climates, they may die back and it's best to trim back those dead tops just as they begin to grow.
