Red hot and ready to rumble!
Firecracker Penstemon (Penstemon eatonii) is about to light your garden up! This native of the West coast is bright and loud and makes a scene.
Firecracker is a native beardtongue, and if you know beardtongues at all, you’ll know how hardy they are in the right locations. They can live for decades on very little care. Firecracker sets the bar high and is the standard-bearer for all other red garden penstemon.
This is a very showy perennial that comes back year after year with tall stalks of fiery orange-red tubular flowers that will capture your attention – and that of your neighbors and every hummingbird, butterfly and pollinator within your neighborhood. It grows 2’-3’ tall in the garden or in containers and keeps pumping out the bright flowers all season long.
It is native to the mountains of the desert southwest, so you know that it is rugged and doesn’t require a lot. It is perfect for rock gardens, xeriscapes and water wise borders. It is easy and eager to naturalize in those hard areas of your garden where other plants fade quickly. You’ll be shocked at the flower power it is capable of in harsh conditions! It doesn’t need a lot of water (too much will stress it) and it loves the heat and the sun.
It also makes a great cut flower!
Plant several of these native beauties in your garden this year and enjoy them for many years to come.
