Sutherland Gold Elderberry
Golden Shrub to Lighten up the Shade
Do you need to lighten and brighten that shady corner of your garden? The Sutherland Gold Elderberry (Sambucus racemosa 'Sutherland Gold') is the shrub for you.
This easy care shrub starts spring with golden leaves and small white flowers. Come summer the leaves soften into lime-green and the flowers turn to red berries that the birds love. The leaves are almost fringe-like, so much so that the shrub is often compared to a large fern.
Even though Sutherland Gold excels in the shade, it is one of the few Elderberries that also handles a good amount of sun without burning. Dappled shade is ideal.
The Sutherland Gold Elderberry shrub prefers humus-rich, moist, well-draining soil, but can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions. It is drought-hardy when well established.
The berries are poisonous to humans if eaten fresh, but if cooked and strained correctly make a great elderberry jelly or wine.
Elderberry shrubs add a softness to your border and foundation plantings, as well as adding a refreshing color option.
