Summer Blues Delphinium (Delphinium 'Summer Blues') is blanketed with 1 ½-inch sky blue florets for a vivid display within the summer garden border! The sky-blue single blooms are held on slender stems all along each flower spike and are suspended loosely all along the entire flowering wand! Each lovely floret has a barely blue-to-white 'bee' at its center for added interest!
A wonderful dwarf cultivar, this herbaceous perennial flowering plant puts on quite the bright show all summer and into autumn - much to the delight of every butterfly and Hummingbirds in your area! Standing at a height of 10-12 inches tall and wide, Summer Blues is a dwarf Delphinium and forms compact mounds of well-branched foliage in early summer. The lush dark green leaves are deeply incised and lobed to be the perfect lacy backdrop for those unearthly blue blooms!
Summer Blues has better heat tolerance and is earlier blooming than other Delphiniums. But it displays the same deer and cold tolerance as the rest of this illustrious family! Small and space-saving, Dwarf Delphiniums are lovely gift plants and ideal for tucking into small yards, container gardens, or those bare spots within an established landscape with ease!
Summer Blues will flower in the first year, making it perfect for bedding, borders, and containers, and providing a colorful display over a long summer period! Traditional cutting garden plants and in groupings or rows throughout Perennial and Cottage borders, you'll add enchantment to walkways, paths, and any garden bed in your landscape with a classic blue Delphinium! These are delightful and fine-textured additions regardless of how much room you have available!
Summer Blues is a space-saving dwarf, and is great when used as edging, a bedding plant, or in containers combined with pastel-colored annuals, fine-textured spillers, and other wand-like blooms! They become the pinnacle focal point flower in mixed planters because of that gorgeous hue! Dress up a patio or front porch planter with elegant finery! The fine textured foliage becomes soothing greenery and fillers, even when the plant is not in flower! Any garden becomes a Butterfly garden with one or more of these frilly perennials!
Delphiniums grow best in full sun and afternoon shade, in locations with enriched, well-drained soil with a basic pH. If your soil is naturally acidic, adding lime will help to provide these conditions. Delphinium appreciates a 3-4 inch thick layer of mulch over the roots. Provide regular moisture all summer for best results and to support the huge blooms.
These dwarf-sized stems rarely need any staking when planted in a protected area, so they remain upright no problem! But if you do grow them in windy locations, a firm stake will help support their stems. Deadhead early enough and you'll enjoy a rebloom until fall, then as the foliage turns yellow, prune back the mound close to the ground and water it in well one last time before the ground freezes.
They are also heavy feeders. The addition of compost or manure to the soil, as well as a granular fertilizer, will result in healthier, stronger plants. It is recommended you wear gloves when handling these plants since some can develop skin sensitivity. Always monitor young pets and young children around Delphinium.
Powdery sky blue drifts of blooms on a dwarf space-saving perennial, the Summer Blues Delphinium will become your new favorite flower this year! Hurry and order yourself or someone special one of these easy-to-care-for bloomers today from NatureHills.com!
