The Pocomoke Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei 'Pocomoke') is a true dwarf Crape Myrtle variety! Released by the U.S. National Arboretum, any sized garden can enjoy full-sized blooms and the Southern charm of a Crape Myrtle without sacrificing any space!

Growing just 3-5 feet in height and 4-5 feet wide, the unique dwarf-size, multi-stemmed shrub displays deep rosy pink blooms throughout the summer, with a rebloom that lasts until frost! The blooms attract bees and butterflies galore!

Snip a few blooms for your bouquets and enjoy a rebloom later in the summer until autumn! This heat-tolerant hardy plant has dark green foliage that turns rich bronze-red in fall. Once the deciduous foliage drops, you'll enjoy the textured bark and mounding for the winter months!

Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 9, many in zone 6 will see their Crape Myrtle act as more of a perennial, dying back to the ground but bouncing back good as new the next spring. Northern growers in zone 5 and lower can enjoy Pocomoke as either a seasonal container annual accent or can bring their potted Myrtle into an unheated garage for the winter and place it back outside in the spring.

Planting and Application:

This drought-tolerant shrub is great for small areas, in containers, or it can also be planted in groups to create a low barrier or property-defining border. Run a line of these rosy flowering ornamentals as facer plants that hide the leggy stems of larger shrubs and trees! Plant them 2 to 3 feet apart for a solid, continuous hedge.

The Pocomoke Crape Myrtle is ideally suited for formal or informal design in the home landscape, street plantings, and community plantings. Go ahead and line a pathway or your driveway with these low-growing, wide-spreading shrubs because Pocomoke won't block your view when backing out the car out of the driveway! It will give you a bit of screening and pretty property division when planted in rows to separate your front yard from the sidewalk!

It can be planted as a specimen or in groups throughout Cottage gardens, as bright accents in your butterfly garden, or just as a crown jewel by your front steps! The dwarf size of Pocomoke is even perfect for container gardens! The rosy blooms fill out as spillers and fillers! Pot up in any planter around your porch and patio, brighten poolside raised planters, or add a matched pair to decorate either side of your sunny front door!

Great en masse plantings, the vivid blooms light up a hillside garden while slowing erosion, spill over the tops of retaining walls, or ramble happily through streetside hell-strip plantings and Rock Gardens!

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Sometimes one word and sometimes spelled Crepe Myrtle, the Pocomoke Crape Myrtle shrub needs full sun and well-drained soil. Allow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. But after that, your dwarf myrtle becomes resilient and tolerant of brief drought. But for best results, provide supplemental moisture during extended periods of hot dry weather. Topdress the soil with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch to hold in moisture and enrich the soil. Crape Myrtles rebloom in late summer if the first flush of flowers is deadheaded. Prune your shrubs in the early spring before growth starts since they bloom on new wood.

  • Full Sun Is Best
  • Needs Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture Then Low-Moisture Once Established
  • Blooms On New Wood - Prune Early Spring
  • Resistant, Tolerant & Adaptable

Before you buy, make sure you know what you're getting! Single-stem, multi-stem and shrub forms are different so read a bit about which we're currently offering below.

Single Stem:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching. Sometimes, you will hear a single stem referred to as Tree Form.

Multi Stem:

These are plants with 2 or more stems planted together in the ground in close proximity to form a clump. There are times multi-stems are formed by a tree that branches at the soil line with more than one main stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
