Crinkly pinkish purple blooms on dense green glossy shrubs, the Catawba Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica 'Catawba') is a vivid flowering deciduous shrub that loves heat and sun! Featuring an extended bloom time and loads of pollinator-friendly flower clusters!

The glossy foliage emerges with coppery hues before maturing to a deep verdant color. Creating a domed shrub 12-15 feet tall and 10-12 feet wide, these fast-growing plants continue to flower until the autumn! Then the gorgeous foliage takes on an incredible orange-red in fall!

Bred for great mildew resistance and long bloom, Catawba is hardy throughout USDA growing zones 7 to 9. Once the fall-colored foliage drops, the bare winter branches reveal the cinnamon bark through the peeling and exfoliating older stems.

Planting and Application:

This shrub-form Crape Myrtle, sometimes spelled Crepe, can be trained by pruning into a single or multi-trunked tree-form specimen by removing the lower branching, called 'limbing-up'. Otherwise, these are incredible shrubs for privacy and flowering screens! Rows or groupings create colorful backdrops and mixed borders.

Single stem specimen or focal point, a single Catawba looks incredible in the front yard landscape or as a feature planting in a backyard seating area. It will draw the eye in a restful way and can suit contemporary, country, rustic, or classic architecture equally as well.

March a row of them along the street, or driveway. For individual plants, give them 10 - 12 feet spacing between the plants. This is a very appealing large shrub or small tree that can also be grouped to create a pretty privacy screen. For the best screen, keep all the lower limbs on and allow it to grow into a friendly flowering shrub.

  • Crinkly Pinkish-Purple Flower Blooms With Yellow Centers
  • Pollinator-Friendly Flower Clusters
  • Exciting Red/Orange Fall Color
  • Gorgeous Bark Delivers Winter Interest
  • Large Shrub or Small Tree, Grow in Containers, Hedges & Screens

#ProPlantTips for Care:

This plant is very adaptable and versatile. Catawba Crape Myrtles are easy to grow in a full sun site. The morning sun is best, with its wonderful drying power. However, you'll be delighted to know this specimen is mildew resistant, so it may not experience the troubles some other Crape Myrtles do.

Crapes thrive in many soil types and climate conditions. Easy care and drought tolerant once established, and is often sought after for its beauty and low maintenance. In early spring, give your Crape Myrtle supplemental water as needed. This will help ensure the new growth is lush and full. And since the plant flowers on new growth, the extra water will give you marvelous Flower Power through the summer and into fall.

Give your shrub good air circulation and plenty of elbow room to grow to the full height and width. Keep things easy for yourself! Pruning this beauty is best done by simply thinning out the branches in early spring.

  • Full Sun & Good Air Circulation
  • Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture - Low Once Established
  • Prune Early Spring
  • Improved Disease & Powdery Mildew Resistance

Single Stem, Multi Stem, Shrub Form, Oh My!

Before you buy, make sure you know what you’re getting! Single stem, multi stem and shrub forms are different so read a bit about which we’re currently offering below.

Single Stem:

These are plants that have one stem coming from the ground. Plants can also be considered single stem when lower branches are removed to raise the height of the branching. Sometimes, you will hear a single stem referred to as Tree Form.

Multi Stem:

These are plants with 3, 4, and sometimes 5 or more stems planted together in the ground in close proximity to form a clump. There are times multi-stems are formed by a tree that branches at the soil line with more than one main stem.

Shrub Form:

These are bushy plants with many stems and branchings close to the ground. They are referred to as shrubs or bushes and are often shorter than their tree forms.
