Coastal native hummingbird magnet!
There is an island off of the coast of California. Like most islands – and most of California – it is a quirky spot that revels in its uniqueness. It’s a perfect mix of wild and domesticated. Once the vacation spot of choice for Hollywood elite in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, it was owned by the Wrigley family (famous for their gum) and home to author Zane Grey. Much of the island is wild, though. Wild enough that a movie crew for a silent film in 1924 used it as a stand-in for the American Midwestern prairie, even going so far as to bring in a small herd of bison to complete the look. (That small herd turned into a big herd that now calls the island home almost 90 years later.)
That unique coastal location is also the home to the California Fuchsia (Zauschneria californica) a gorgeous native that is just as wild and domesticated as the island it comes from. Hardy in zones 8-10, this is a very showy perennial that has brilliant color all summer long with its large, trumpet-shaped flowers that are as orange-red as the sun setting over the coast. The leaves are a soft greenish-grey and the stems are tinged red. Its shaggy shape brings a carefree but cultivated look to the garden.
This hardy plant adapts to average garden conditions with ease, but is very drought tolerant once it is established and should be the cornerstone of any xeric or water-wise garden plan. It grows 3-5 feet tall and wide and is absolutely irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies and other pollinators.
So, maybe you can’t live like the Hollywood elite from yesteryear, but you can have the garden that looks like it! Don’t let this native beauty get away from you. Order your California Fuchsia from us today!
