St. John's Wort Plant for Sale at Nature Hills Nursery

People have used Hypericum shrub varieties as herbal medicine to combat depression and decorate their landscapes for millennia. You'll find a range of St. John's Wort plants for sale right here at Nature Hills Nursery. You can also be assured you're getting St. John's Wort varieties that bring a healthy addition to your landscape.

St. John's Wort

There are over 500 species of Hypericums, and they range from trees to woody subshrubs to deciduous perennials. It's important to understand that not all St. John's Wort plants are the same.

Some varieties, like Hypericum perforata, perform too well in the Northwest United States.

Our online nursery offers non-invasive, well-behaved native and natural hybrid Hypericum plants. We only grow plants that were developed by top plant breeders, like Proven Winners® and Iowa State University.

We don't recommend that you ingest garden-grown Hypericum. Discuss St. John's Wort supplements with your physician, especially if you are taking prescription medicine; then visit your local health food store for more advice.

Professional florists use the cute, capsular fall fruit in cut flower arrangements, too! Count on NatureHills.com to help guide you to safe landscaping plants that perform beautifully in your garden.

Go ahead and enjoy growing many happy blooms from our curated collection. Our St. John's Wort plants thrive in tough conditions, and deer tend to leave them alone.

St. John's Wort Plant Varieties

Before you invest in any of the St. John's Wort plant varieties, it's important to know the difference between Hypericum perforatum and Hypericum kalmianum.

European native Hypericum performatum has several common names, such as Tipton's Weed, Rosin Rose, Goatweed and Aaron's Beard. In the United States, they produce so many long-lived seeds that they have become invasive.

Even the well-behaved Hypericum kalmianum may be regulated in certain areas. That's why Nature Hills Nursery uses Plant Sentry®, an online plant shipping software tool that blocks shipments as needed.

Type in your zip code above the Plant Highlights section on every product page. You'll see right away if we can safely ship our cultivated St. John's Wort to your region.

St. John's Wort Plant: A 'Wort' By Any Other Name?

Let's explain what "wort" means in Old English. This ancient term translates to medicinal 'plant', but can be traced further back to Proto-Indo-European entomology of "root".

St. John the Baptist is celebrated with a Holy Day of June 24. Blooming European native Hypericum perforatum plants were traditionally hung above door frames to ward off evil spirits on the eve of St. John's Day.

Health food stores tout St. John's Wort as a curative for anxiety, PMS, and depression. But we like to say it's the cheerful blooms and working outside in your garden that can help boost your mood.

Well-Behaved St. John's Wort Plant Landscaping Ideas

Plant a ribbon of color at the edge of your shrub borders, or along the front walk. A durable native Hypericum hedge brings smiles all season long.

Don't forget to include these flower factories in butterfly and pollinator gardens. Easy-care Sunburst St. John's Wort is excellent for cutting gardens, too.

The waterwise native Sunny Boulevard St. John's Wort plant is a Blue Ribbon Winner at the University of California Davis Landscape Irrigation Trials. It's widely adaptable to many soil types (except marshy, wet soils) and can be grown in full sun or partial shade.

People have had tremendous success growing St. John's wort in containers, too. These mounding plants offer blue-green foliage and yellow blooms through the summer — without the pain of deadheading.

St. John's Wort is widely used as a groundcover and in rock gardens. This works especially well with creeping St. John's Wort. Established plants tolerate a bit of drought.

Ornamental St. John's Wort can also be used to fill in the bare ground at the feet of mature evergreen trees, especially those with very competitive root systems. Make sure St. John's Wort plants receive at least four hours of direct sunlight a day.

The St. John's Wort plants for sale online at Nature Hills Nursery are comprised of improved modern cultivars. St. John's Wort flowers are long-lasting and rich, bright yellow.

The beautiful clusters of yellow saucer-shaped blooms appear in early summer and keep coming through late summer. Five petals surround a showy central boss of fluffy stamens.

They will certainly brighten up the landscape, and you'll love seeing the butterflies gather their nectar.

The attractive, willow-like leaves of the Wort plant are linear-oblong but do vary in size and width. First Editions Glory St. John's Wort foliage is a bit wider than others; try a mix of all of our cultivars for a pretty, non-stop display.

Decorate with St. John's Wort Berries

Plant lovers also grow Hypericum for the ornamental fall fruit. First Editions Beauty St. John's Wort features rosy-salmon fruit that makes a bold addition to cut flower arrangements.

St. John's Wort berries are abundant, and they develop on long, four-angled branches that grow upright. Their sturdy structure helps hold up other flowers.

Leave some of the berries on your St. John's Wort shrub to deepen in color over time. They'll give you something pretty to capture your attention during winter.

Planting and Growing St. John's Wort

These easy-to-grow, shrubby perennials develop blue-green leaves and bright yellow flowers in full sun or part shade. They need well-drained soils for the longest life.

If you keep them in containers, consider drilling additional drainage holes. Container-grown plants need consistent supplemental water.

For in-ground plants, dig your planting hole twice as wide as the root system, but no deeper. If you see puddles that remain after a rainfall, create a raised bed or planting mound to improve the drainage.

Mulch over their root system, especially in growing zone 4. Prune in early spring to remove any winter damage.

Ames St. John's Wort is a cold-hardy selection. You'll love the uniform shape of this cultivar.

Add the attractive fall foliage and showy fruit of densely branched Hypericum kalmianum and other improved hybrid selections to your garden design. The bright yellow blooms are an important nectar resource for beneficial pollinators and butterflies. Check out the St. John's Wort plants for sale at Nature Hills Nursery, and place your order today!
