The Smokebush is a multi-branched, deciduous, shrubby bush or small tree (if trained by pruning) that is in the genus Cotinus. The smokebush is a native of Europe and China. The Smokebush produces irregular branching. The branches are covered with long leaves, up to 3 inches, slightly rounded, and they are shiny.

Smokebush are coveted for their fluffy plumes. The plumes are so dense and fluffy that the plant appears to be in a smoky haze of color. Because of its spectacular display of plumes the smokebush makes an ideal specimen plant.

Smokebush do best in full sun or partial shade. They will grow in shady areas but the stems and bushes tend to become leggy in the shade. Smokebush is an easy shrub to grow. It will tolerate many soil types and withstand hot dry spots better than most shrubs. They will tolerate a wide range of pH levels. The pH range for smokebush should be between 3.7 and 6.8. The fall color of some varieties of smokebush is gorgeous. Summer foliage colors can be purple to light green depending on the cultivar.
