Lustrous silvery gray-green with burgundy-tinges always enlivens the shady spots of your garden beautifully!

A cross between a Lady Fern and Japanese Painted Fern has the best of both parents! The mid-sized mounding perennial, Branford Beauty Fern (Athyrium x 'Branford Beauty') bears upright silvery-grey fronds raised on rosy-red stems.

These Ferns form dense mats of delicate, finely divided fronds, with lovely burgundy tones. Plus, with extreme cold hardiness and tolerance for soggy, wet soil, there aren't too many places that Branford finds itself useful.

How to Use Branford Beauty Fern In The Landscape

Perfect as specimen plants that light up the shade. A terrific contrast to bold-leaved plants such as Hosta and Liriope, and a wonderful companion to like-foliage plants such as Bleeding Hearts and Astilbe.

Great size for containers, any shaded patio will become a lush hideaway! With Branford's dense, low growth and tidy spreading nature, it fills gaps between shrubs and under trees.

Ferns add tranquility to the foreground of shady beds, gracefully line woodland pathways, or define borders from the lawn in lush greenery.

Water features are perfect scenes for Branford Fern to ramble and naturalize in the shade. They're highly deer and rabbit resistant, so those out-of-the-way areas won't need any supervision from nibbling visitors.

Asian and Zen-inspired gardens, moist cottage gardens, rustic and urban styles alike will make this Fern feel at home. Forming dense mats, this clump-forming Fern is perfect for erosion control.

#ProPlantTips For Care

Supreme cold hardiness, Branford Beauty Fern is hardy in growing zones 4 and up. Reaching a sizable 3' tall and 4' wide, the dense growth needs organically rich, consistently moist soils.

A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill. Not particular on soil type, as long as it drains well. Tolerant of slightly alkaline and slightly acid soil.

Branford requires full shade in warmer summer zones but can tolerate part sun in cooler areas. Afternoon shade is always appreciated in the summer.

Foliage is deciduous and can be divided in spring, so leaves should be pruned to the ground in late fall to not give fungus and slugs a place to hide.

Branford Beauty Ferns are a phenomenal addition of lovely color to a shade garden. With its graceful fern-like foliage, this plant will add texture to any shaded landscape! You'll be glad to have this sterling beauty rambling throughout your gardens, so give Nature Hills Nursery a call today!
