Hybrid Tea Roses: What Are They & How to Care For Them

Hybrid Tea Roses: What Are They & How to Care For Them

Header

Roses take on a larger sense of importance in society. After all, humanity has been growing and cultivating desirable Rose traits like petal count and fragrance for 5,000 years!

Chinese gardeners developed extensive Rose gardens, while Egyptians traded cut flowers with neighboring Rome. Later, Parisians lined their streets with shops dedicated to herbal extracts for soaps and salves.

One of the oldest forms of cultivated garden Roses is the elegant Hybrid Tea Rose! It’s what most think of when they picture a Rose! Hybrid Teas are one of the most popular of the Garden Rose class, due to their elegant form and large variety of colors!

The Hybrid Tea originated in France in the mid-1800s by crossing heirloom Tea Roses with other varieties for a repeat-flowering, long-stemmed form of Rose. The first Hybrid Tea Rose was found on the grounds of a professional Rose breeder named Jean-Baptiste Guilliot. It's believed to be a chance seedling cross between a Hybrid Perpetual 'Mme. Victor Verdier', and a Tea Rose 'Mme. Bravy'.

Hybrid Teas became their own class of Roses in 1879, when British Rose breeder, Henry Bennett, introduced ten "Pedigree Hybrids of the Tea Rose" in Stapleford, Wiltshire.

Pop Art™ Rose

And the Hybrid Tea Rose has been a garden standard ever since!

  • Wide Range of Colors
  • High Centered Blooms With Pointed Buds
  • Typically A Large Single Bloom Atop Each Long Stem Sometimes Has Side Buds
  • Usually Fragrant & Double Petalled (Or More!)
  • Grafted Via Budding For Hardiness & On Disease-Resistant RootStock

Hybrid Tea Roses generally produce a single, flawless flower at the end of a long stem, but usually produce repeat flushes of blooms throughout the season. This welcome trait is inherited from their Tea Rose parentage. They also inherited their large flower size and hardiness from their Hybrid Perpetual parents, producing large, fragrant flowers 4 to 6 inches in diameter.

Each dynamic cultivar also produces a large number of petals, referred to as a high-petal count. The tightly held buds with raised centers, open into beautiful, full flowers with sculpted petals.

Care Tips for Hybrid Tea Roses

Lavish your love on your Hybrid Tea Rose bushes! Their effervescent charm and beauty more than compensate for their nominal care needs!

  • Full sun
  • Enriched soil
  • Great drainage
  • Regular moisture access

Provide consistent water and regular applications of Rose food. Conduct proper hygiene by picking up and disposing of leaf litter, and always use sanitized pruners.

Apply a 3-4 inch deep layer of mulch around the base of your plant. This not only stops moisture loss from the sun and heat but also insulates the roots. Mulch also keeps soil from splashing onto the leaves, thereby preventing soil-borne disease, fungi, and powdery mildew from your plant.

Whether grafted or grown on their own root, in the colder USDA hardiness zone 7 and lower you should do a bit more to prepare your Rose for winter. Mound the plants with a foot of clean mulch in late fall each year as soon as the foliage has died back and fallen away. Ensuring you have first removed as many fallen leaves, so any lingering problems aren’t trapped with the plant over the winter.

In spring, pull the mulch back and then prune the tops down to 8-12 inches each year for excellent success. Plants may get much taller in warmer climates where the growing season is longer so it is important to trim them in early spring each year.

Prune Roses in the spring, just as you see new buds appearing. Stems should be cut back to within one-quarter inch of an outside bud. This will help to encourage the Rose bush to grow outwards, instead of inwards. Deadhead Roses throughout the growing season, snipping back to a part of the stem with foliage that has 5 leaflets instead of three. New blooms will quickly grow to take their place!
