BANANAPPEAL

Those of you who live in warm southern states know that shade is a good thing. It provides a place to rest out of the blazing southern sun and heat. Unfortunately, it can also be a challenging place to grow colorful and interesting things to make that resting place more restful. To help with that Nature Hills is proud to offer Bananappeal Small Anise Tree (Illicium parviflorum 'PIIIP-I')

This is a compact form of native Anise that has been bred to be better-behaved than other versions of Illicium. It won't shoot out long gangly stems at random and the leaves won't fade out in the winter. Instead, it stays in a nice round 3-foot mound and has golden-yellow leaves that practically glow in the shade! The pretty blooms are also fragrant and attract loads of pollinators.

The leaves smell like licorice when crushed or brushed so you'll want to plant them somewhere where you can touch them and release the great smell into the garden! People love it, but deer do not, so you don't have to worry about it becoming part of a wildlife buffet. Despite being related to the Anise plants that produce the spice, do not use Bananappeal® for culinary uses as it is actually toxic to humans.

Planting and Application:

Because of its smaller stature and compact habit it makes a great container plant and works well on the shady patio or porch. It doesn't tend toward suckering like other Illiciums do, either, so it will stay where you put it in your shade garden. Once Bananappeal® has been established it is totally low-maintenance, which makes your restful shade garden even more restful. Handling periodic moisture, these are great for water features, Rain Gardens, and near the gutters that always create an occasional soggy spot.

Perfect for Sensory gardens and wonderful in a hedge along where you frequently walk past them and can enjoy their fragrance! The star-shaped seeds are a bird's favorite. Despite being called a tree, these dwarf shrubby bushes stay small and perfect for year-round foundation color, low hedges and property division, or backdrops for small perennial gardens! Add bright pops of color throughout mixed-shrub borders with these tidy little evergreens!

  • Broadleaf Evergreen That Loves Shade
  • Colorful All Year!
  • Easy, Low-Maintenance Native Selection
  • Butterfly & Bird Friendly

#ProPlantTips for Care:

Hardy USDA growing zones 7-9, Anise do great in the heat! Maintaining their color in full shade, these small trees cannot handle full or even partial shade. Provide a moderately moist location that is well mulched for best results and health all year. Prune after flowering if needed, but these are incredibly low-maintenance plants!

  • Full Shade
  • Moderate to Occasionally High Moisture
  • Any Well-Drained Soil
  • Prune After Flowering
  • Deer Resistant
