Brilliant blooms and colorful winter foliage! The Encore® Autumn Princess® Azalea, (Rhododendron 'Roblea' PP12142) is known for its repeat bloom, sun tolerance, and gorgeous pink flowers. Your Encore® Autumn Princess® Azalea is an amazing Azalea variety with a lot to offer for its diminutive stature. The entire line of Encore® Azaleas are very easy-care and low-maintenance!

You'll adore the semi-double blooms with their delightful, ruffled appearance that just begs you to reach out and touch their delicate beauty. Hummingbirds and bees adore these blooms and are grateful for the early spring nectar resource! Each individual 2-inch blossom would be enough to light up your landscape with its salmon-pink intensity.

Most Azalea varieties would complete their bloom with the arrival of summer, but not your Autumn Princess®! This fabulous reblooming Azalea stays nice and compact. Hardy throughout USDA growing zones 6 to 9, these lovely bright garden highlights grow to a 3-5 foot height and 2-3 foot width at maturity. Once the cooler months of the year come around, the entire shrub transforms into a lovely purple, then back to green once spring returns.

Planting and Application:

You could use these as foundation plantings, or place a few in containers to dress up your outdoor living space or balcony. This is a versatile small shrub with year-round greenery! You'll definitely get your money's worth with this superior choice! It brightens the look of older evergreen trees and shrubs. Give them an easy face-lift with several Autumn Princess® at their feet. Add them to established borders or mixed plantings, too.

When viewed en masse, as the blooms blanket your shrub in color, the effect is stunning! Encore® Azaleas! This is truly a modern-day foundation plant! Brighten your existing plantings with pops of color, use them as garden backdrops, or try two of them flanking either side of your front door! Why not trim your front walk in these eye-catching beauties? Create a solid, low hedge by planting 2 feet on center. You'll measure from the center of one to the center of the next plant.

#ProPlantTips For Care

This low-maintenance flowering shrub tolerates full sun and heat, as long as the soil is mulched. If you live in a climate with very hot summers, give them some shade in the afternoon for the best results. Give them 4 - 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Ideally, Rhododendrons and Azaleas love a cool, moist, slightly acidic garden soil that is high in organic matter. Use pine bark/pine straw mulch to add acidity and improve your soil over time. Provide a moderate amount of water on a regular basis. Keep containers watered by setting them on a drip irrigation system to keep it easy for yourself.

When planting Azaleas in the ground, it's better to plant too high, than too low. Mound up when planting by leaving a few inches of the root ball showing above the ground. Pull pine bark or pine straw mulch up to cover the root system. Plan to reapply a mulch layer each year.

If your soil is high pH alkaline, or doesn't drain well, you can grow Autumn Princess® Encore Azalea in pretty planters. Ensure there are several drainage holes, and plant them in an Acid Lovers potting soil mix.

Right after the spring bloom is past, give your plants a light trim to encourage new flowers and correct shape, as needed. Avoid any major summer or fall pruning, or you will remove next year's spring flowers. Weed your plantings regularly, as the shallow roots won't like the competition. Apply a good, organic, slow-release Acid Lovers fertilizer in early spring according to the product directions.

  • Grows in Full Sun & Partial Shade
  • Acidic Well-Drained Soil
  • Moderate Moisture & Mulched Beds

  • Prune After Flowering

The entire Encore® series of Azaleas truly are exceptional, and Autumn Princess® is a lovely choice among them. Hardy, and small enough to fit in just about anywhere, Encore® Autumn Princess® Azalea will provide you with years of carefree beauty! Order now at Nature Hills!

Azalea and Rhododendron Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the best place to plant an Azalea bush?

Azaleas and Rhododendrons prefer partial shade (both dappled shade all day or morning sun with afternoon shade). Plant in a slightly acidic, consistently moist, enriched and well-drained soil location for best results. Their shallow roots dislike soggy soil but thrive with a 3-4 inch layer of arborist mulch over their surface.

How big does an Azalea bush get?

Encore® Autumn Princess® Azalea can reach around 3 - 5 feet in height and 2 - 3 feet in width in optimal conditions.

Are Azalea bushes low maintenance?

Azalea and Rhododendron shrubs are very easy to grow and low maintenance. Water during drought, prune only after flowering and fertilize with an acid-loving organic, slow-release flowering plant fertilizer.

What is the difference between Rhododendrons and Azaleas?

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons but not all Rhodondendrons are Azaleas. Azalea tends to be smaller-sized with smaller leaves and stems, while Rhododendrons can be larger with stout branching and larger bloom trusses. There can both be either deciduous or broad-leaved evergreens.
