The well-known healthful and delicious Audubon® Native Elderberry Shrub (Sambucus canadensis) is a showy ornamental with many benefits for you and your feathered friends! Filling out in tropical-looking foliage, these deciduous bushes grow into an upright, vase shape quickly, so you won’t wait long to benefit from its wonderful features!

Wonderful Pollinator Garden Plants, Elderberry are caterpillar Host Plants for Cecropia Moths and many others. Beneficial pollinators adore the 10-inch large domes of fragrant fluffy white flowers when they open in early summer! By late summer, big clusters of sweet, purple-black fruits appear and attract every bird in the neighborhood!

Not only do Elderberry flowers and fruit have amazing health benefits for us, but local and migrating pollinators and birds relish these tasty morsels! As autumn progresses, the foliage tints to an attractive yellow for the last gasp of seasonal interest.

Planting and Application:

Used effectively for erosion control, Elderberry forms large thickets for bird shelter and nesting. Plant rows or groupings for impressive privacy and screening borders, or just one specimen in a naturalized garden area for some decorative interest.

Including Thrushes, Waxwings, Wood Warblers, Finches, Mockingbirds, Thrashers, Chickadees, Titmice, Orioles, Cardinals, Grosbeaks, Crow, Jays, Sparrows, Nuthatches, Vireos, Hummingbirds, Woodpeckers and Wrens according to the Audubon website.
