Rheinland Astilbe is most successfully grown in a shady area but can tolerate some morning sun. Especially in the warmer hardiness zones, be sure to plant these tender perennials where they’ll be protected from the hot afternoon sun or completely full shade! Hardy in North America growing zones 4-9, these are very cold tolerant herbaceous perennial plants!

Moist, well-drained soil is a key feature for growing a healthy Astilbe plant. It's also best to not allow Rheinland to overly dry out, as all Astilbe prefers moist, humus, organically-rich soils.

Adding mulch is recommended in drier areas, to help maintain soil moisture and insulate the root system from heat and cold. Top dress your site with at least 2-3 inches of mulch, extending out past the leaves for a finished look and to maintain consistent soil moisture.

In order to keep Astilbe looking good for the next year, do not cut it back in the winter, (the old foliage helps protect the plant from winter damage), but prune in early spring so it will look fresh and ready for the next growing season.
