The Hudson's Golden Gem Organic Heirloom Apple, Malus domestica 'Hudson's Golden Gem', is one of the largest and best flavored russet apples. A world-class dessert apple, it was discovered as a wild seedling growing along a fence row at the Hudson Nursery in Tangent, Oregon, in 1931. The apples are crisp and sugary with flavor described as nutty by some, pear like by others; resembles the Bosc pear in flavor. The Hudson's Golden Gem is conical in shape with a very distinctive appearance. The fruit is smooth and uniform with a light yellowish-brown russet over the entire surface. In climates where it is grown, the fruit hangs on the tree into winter, and is a good keeper. Ripening in October, this variety of fresh apple is medium sized, coming from a tree that is vigorous and winter hardy, as well as resistant to scab, mildew and fireblight.
