What the Allegheny® Pawpaw (Asimina triloba 'Allegheny') might lack in size is made up for with its wonderful flavor. Combined with very smooth, silky sweet-flavored flesh, the result is almost custard-like!

Allegheny® Pawpaws flower in the spring, and you will get a lovely dark red to reddish-purple blossom in an iconic bell shape. Unfortunately, the usual pollinators do not come to visit these blooms so a second Pawpaw variety or hand pollination is required. The blooms are unusual however and add a curious touch to your spring floral show!

The Allegheny® Pawpaw looks a little like a green Mango. Its fruit is small to medium but remember - size isn't everything! This petite fruit is absolutely jam-packed with ultra-rich flavor!

The smooth and delicious sweet creamy yellow flesh that combines the flavors of citrus, mangos, bananas, pineapple, and just a hint of vanilla, this is an incredibly flavorful fruit!

One of the earliest ripening, it is perfect to eat straight from the tree or turn into pies, cakes, and custard. It also makes a unique treat for the kids!

How to Use Allegheny® Pawpaw Tree In The Landscape

Pawpaws are unable to self-pollinate, so you will need to plant a partner that is not genetically the same. You can also hand pollinate by using a small brush. Take a look at some of our other varieties of Pawpaw for a tree that works for your area!

Also, head over to our Garden Blog for a great high-density planting technique for those without room for two trees!

Raccoons and Opossums consider Pawpaws one of their favorite fruit. So Allegheny® is also a wonderful wildlife tree! Create a shelterbelt for wildlife protection, while also creating a windbreak and privacy hedgerow by planting rows of these ornamental trees close together! You'll have a wonderful animal-friendly screening that also puts delectable fruit on the table!

The lovely, long green foliage adds a tropical appeal to your landscape as well as providing shade throughout the garden!

Tolerating sun and part shade, this versatile tree is a hardy native with all the looks and appeal of an exotic tree! Taking on amazing yellow fall color, this is a superior fruit tree with all the benefits of a flowering ornamental!

#ProPlantTips For Care

The Allegheny® Pawpaw produces a large crop despite its small size. It is a hardy variety that

isn't bothered by cold weather like its tropical relatives: the Cherimoya, Soursop and Custard-Apple. Cold hardy throughout USDA growing zones 5 through 9, it's also rather heat and humidity tolerant as well!

Growing in most types of soil Pawpaw prefers well-drained soil, favoring loam that is slightly acidic. Provide ample organic matter and fertility. For best results, fertilize your tree regularly with Dr. Earth Fruit Tree Fertilizer or a good organic, slow-release fertilizer. Add Nature Hills Root Booster while planting for a life-long symbiotic relationship with the tiny feeder roots.

Plant it in full sun for best yields. If you are using this variety for landscaping, it thrives in partial shade, as well! Loving moist soil, these hardy natives can be partially drought-tolerant but do their best when given consistent moisture access.

A generous layer of mulch helps retain soil moisture as well as insulate the root system from heat and chill.

For larger fruit, some thinning is needed and pruning when dormant to remove crossing branches, control size and remove diseased limbs. You'll want to harvest your fruit as soon as it ripens to prevent damage to your limbs from the weight.

This variety is resistant to insects and disease. Want a tree that will double as part of your landscape? It is time for you to order your Allegheny® Pawpaw. You've never had fruit like this and it certainly beats anything from the grocery store! Order yours at today!
