Colorful, Fragrant and Cold Hardy
Abelia ‘Fragrant’ (Alba mosanensis) is one of those plants that really lives up to its name. It is covered in remarkably fragrant pink blooms from May to June, and when we say ‘remarkably fragrant’, we mean it. Some folks say these smell better and stronger than lilacs in full bloom! Smell some yourself and see if you agree.
Even though the flowers seem delicate and petite, don’t let this plant fool you. It is one of the hardiest plants that you can buy. Originally found in the Baltic State of Latvia, this shrub can handle a harsh winter like a champ. When other abelias are killed to the ground due to the cold, ‘Fragrant’ doesn’t even have tip burn.
Through spring and summer Fragrant Abelia is covered in glossy green foliage on gracefully arching stems. In the fall the leaves turn a sharp orange-red that will really stand out in your landscape. When the leaves drop, the stems provide a nice shape against the winter landscape.
Fragrant Abelia rarely needs pruning. It plays nicely with all of the other plants in your garden. Use it liberally for beautiful hedges or borders. It is also outstanding as a specimen plant to highlight part of your landscape. It definitely will draw the eye - and the nose!
