Drought Tolerant Perennials
When choosing low-watering perennial plants, it is wise to match the plants to the climate, especially if growing conditions are quite dry. Water shortage has become a concern in our world today, so having a wide selection of drought tolerant perennials available is reassuring. Drought tolerant perennials have a deep root system that seek moisture well below the surface.
These perennials perform best in hot, dry climates with full sun, and many of our yards have dry areas where these plants will thrive very well. Educate yourself on which plants can adapt to your specific dry areas. You can plant them on sunny slopes where water evaporates quickly, or next to the pavement or patio. It is best to plant drought tolerant perennials in groupings so they can be managed effectively.
For a difficult area, try planting Ajuga Bronze Beauty. It is a tough little ground cover that will tolerate shade and drought. Coreopsis ‘Full Moon’ will give you a wave of lovely yellow flowers if planted in mass. They are sun, drought, and heat tolerant plants. Other plants that are often used in zeriscape gardening and landscapes are native grasses such as Big Bluestem and Fountain grasses. Salvia, Russian Sage, Daylilies are also good basic plants that will brighten a zeriscape setting.
