Tulip Poplar

Fast-growing shade tree that should have a place in every yard!

The Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera), also called the Tulip Tree and Yellow Poplar, is a unique, fast growing tree with a brilliant spring display.

Surprisingly, the Tulip Poplar isn’t a Poplar as the name implies. It is actually a member of the Magnolia family. So beautiful that it’s the state tree for three different states.

In spring you will delighted to see your tree nearly covered in large yellow, green and orange “tulips”. The blooms will continue into early summer and will fill your yard with a light floral fragrance.

Throughout the summer the 5 inch leaves are reminiscent of a tulip shape in profile and will blanket your Poplar in a vibrant green.  Its natural conical canopy will shade your family and provide relief from the hot sun.

In autumn your Tulip Poplar grants a spectacular display when its leaves turn a brilliant lemon yellow. Get out your sunglasses because the brightest tree in the neighborhood will be in your yard.

The Tulip Poplar is valued for the large quantities of nectar it produces each year and is a veritable magnet for wildlife.  Planting this Poplar in your yard will attract cardinals, hummingbirds, and butterflies.

Just as wildlife enjoys the Poplar for its varied attributes, so also will you enjoy its presence in your landscape.

My outstanding tulip tree. Review by Zillon

My tree is 20 or 30 feet high, rather narrow, perfect for a small front yard, and the flowers are so beautiful that walkers stop by to look at them and marvel over them. It's about 20 years old.

I was in Chile and saw these trees planted in a park. They were beautiful! When I found it available at Nature Hills I thought the price was reasonable, so I bought one. I was pleasantly surprised at the size of tree I received (about 7 ft tall). It was packaged nice and the tree was in good shape. Although the buds havent opened up yet (still early spring) to give it my full opinion of the health of the tree, I think it was a good value for what it was priced at. Cant wait to see it when the leaves open up and hopefully some nice tulips!

A car left the street and ran into my young, beautiful tulip poplar this winter. I just read your description on your website and all you say is true, if only I could get a bigger one to replace the big one I had.

I planted 2 of these trees in the backyard. They are growing so fast and I then looked at the mature size on your website. I may have to take one of them down because it is a little close to the house when it gets mature. I am going to enjoy the spring flowers though for as long as I can.

This tree intruiges me; it looks beautiful and so I planted one a year or so ago in full sun and "moist" soil. It leafed out nicely last summer, survived our Maine winter, and grew baby buds this spring as well -- but I must have planted it in too wet an area (though the soil requirement says "moist"). We had an extraordinarily rainy spring and for a while the poor tree was standing in a little pool and, sadly, it subsequently died. I would like to try again but I admit to feeling a little insecure about the "moist" soil advisory.....our land slopes gradually into a swale; there's an invisible line between dry and moist!
