The two most common locust trees are the Black Locust and the Honey Locust.  The Black Locust's botanical name is Robinia, and the other varieties of honey locust are in the Gleditsia family.  All locusts are extremely hardy trees and fast growing. They can tolerate urban conditions, marginal soils, compacted soil, alkaline soil, heat and drought. The Black Locust does have a very nice spring fragrant flower display; whereas, the Honey Locust blooms are not quite as prominent but they are fragrant.

Locust trees are noted for their strong, dense wood and are easy to maintain.  They are well regarded for windbreaks and their gorgeous fall color.  Most locust trees are not densely leaved so lawn grass can and will thrive under these trees.  Locust trees offer filtered shade rather than dense shade.  Honey Locusts' leaves are not large and as numerous as maple trees, so fall cleanup is much faster and easier.  For more information click on any picture or call Nature Hills at 888.864.7663.
