Trees in the genus Carya are commonly known as hickory. They are hardwoods and the most commonly known are, shagbark, shellbark, mockernut, pignut, pecan and bitternut. All are known for their hardnuts with the exception of the pecan, Carya illinoensis, which is commonly named the hardy pecan. Pecans are an excellent tree for use in the home landscape. It is a great provider of pecan nuts and shade.
Hickory trees are long-lived and as a general rule produces hard, strong, and stiff lumber. Hickory wood has long been used for flooring because of it toughness and attractive appearance. Hickory wood has been in use as one of the preferred woods for bar-b-que and for ‘hickory smoked meats’.
