Attractive Shrub with Edible Nuts
The Hazelnut is a lovely shrub that is a fast grower and will thrive almost anywhere. . It is a fast grower and attains a mature size of 12 feet tall with a 15 foot spread, but can be pruned and shaped if desired.
In the spring, 3-inch clusters of male catkins appear. Dark green, heart-shaped, 3-6 inch serrated leaves follow the flowers in late spring.
When fall arrives, your Hazelnut colors will vary, from oranges and yellows to the color of a deep red wine. In late summer, clusters of ½ inch green leafy capsules will appear throughout the bush, eventually turning brown. When they ripen in late fall, gently pop off the brown husk to reveal the nut inside.
Raw or roasted, the Hazelnut is an outstanding nut. It’s sweet in flavor and although having a variety of uses, is often used in desserts. It’s rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Deer and other wildlife are attracted to the shade during the growing season and the nuts in the fall.
