American Mountain-ash

The Mountain Ash, American, Sorbus americana, is a smooth-barked tree that can reach a height of 30 feet with a trunk 18 inches in diameter. The crown is narrow, open and rounded at the top.

This tree provides spring and summer interest, with white flower clusters in the spring, and then these blooms yield brightly colored clusters of red berries in the summertime. Its dark green leaves resemble those of the sumac and turn orange and purple in the fall.

The berries are a favorite wildlife food for many birds and mammals during the fall and winter months. Mountain Ash berries can be eaten fresh, dried for later use, or used to make jellies and jams.

Mountain Ash prefers acidic soil with good drainage and full sun to light shade; enjoys full sun but can be grown easily in shade.

This winter hardy Mountain Ash tree is used as an ornamental in many yards and in cities. This beautiful tree has a great resistance to smog related pollution.
