Tiarella - Sea Foam Foam Flower
The Tiarella Sea Foam, 'Tiarella hybrid', also known as Foamflower, is becoming one of the most popular shade perennials on the market today. They are commonly known as foam flowers because their masses of tiny, spidery flowers appear on top of short stalks, and collectively they look like foam on a stick.
A charming, shade-loving foliage plant for the woodland garden, ‘Sea Foam’ has deeply cut fuzzy green foliage. No other Tiarella has a better contrast in the leaf color than ‘Sea Foam’. The highlights of black and purple patterns make it what it is. Best of all, the coloration is more intense during the winter months.
The cream colored flowers appear in the summer; however, Tiarellas are not noted for their flowers, but their foliage.
‘Sea Foam’ has a plant height of 6-8” and a plant spread of 14”. Tiarella will do best in full shade and needs average to moist soil.
Tiarella can tolerate a wide range of soil conditions, but prefer cool, moist, humus-rich soil in deep or partial shade. This low maintenance plant can endure a site with 3-5 hours of dappled sunlight per day.
‘Sea Foam’ is a clumping plant that has great texture, so try planting this popular perennial with Lamium ‘White Nancy’, Hosta ‘Patriot’ or ‘Japanese Painted Fern’. They can be planted as a ground cover or mingled with other shade loving plants. PPAF
