Fine-Textured, Ornamental Shrub

Crisp Leaf Spiraea is a deciduous shrub with bright, flashy flowers. Plant a few for a colorful and interesting groundcover, or anywhere you'd like something a bit different to fill in some empty spaces.

It's hard to know which is more stunning on this popular garden shrub, the magnificent flowers or incredible foliage. Large, flat-topped clusters of hot-pink flowers appear in late spring to early summer.

The leaves appear with a burgundy tinge, transitioning to a blue-tinted, green shade. Each leaf is pointed, with a crinkly appearance that seems to reference the "Crisp Leaf" moniker.

Autumn finds Crisp Leaf changing colors once again when the leaves take on shades of bronze for fall. The fine textured nature of this shrub makes it a perfect companion for less-refined plantings, bringing a bit more textural diversity to your landscape design.

Crisp Leaf Spiraea is a multi-stemmed shrub with a somewhat rounded nature and compact form. Crisp Leaf is adaptable to a variety of soils and drought, deer and urban tolerant. It's quite hardy and under ideal conditions can be expected to live up to 20 years.

Even without its spring/early summer blooms, Crisp Leaf Spiraea has a lot to offer. It's different from more common shrub options while still being hardy and easy to care for. Why not bring the unique texture, form and color of this wonderful shrub to your home this year!

versitile and easy to grow - likes water - but not soggy

I have a Michigan home that it is beautiful in the front yard in a curve - several of them - and they are better every year. I usually divide them every 3 to 4 years because they grow so dense - not I am bring some to my central Florida home - so I am taking the zone 9 chartruce leaf ones there and I have a home in north west Florida that I can take both the dark green leaf and chartruce leaf ones. Love this shrub. By the way - it will give at least 2 to 3 flushes if trimmed up north and more down south - you may want to feed it more down south for best repeat bloom

Dear Lenkielorraine,

Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience with Crisp Leaf Spirea! It’s fantastic to hear how beautiful they look in your Michigan yard and that they return even better each year. Your practice of dividing them every few years and adapting them across different Florida zones shows such thoughtful care—and what an exciting idea to enjoy both the chartreuse and dark green leaf varieties across your homes!

You’re absolutely right about that balance of watering—keeping the soil moist but well-drained really is key to their success. Your tip about increased feeding when planting in southern regions is excellent advice for vibrant repeat blooms, and no doubt very helpful for others growing spirea in warmer climates.

If you continue playing around with dividing and moving them between zones, you might find spot-fertilizing with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in early spring will support the multiple bloom cycles. Also, light pruning just after bloom helps may improve the flush flowering you mentioned.

We truly appreciate your detailed insights and hope your spirea continue thriving in every lovely yard they grace.

Bloom on,

Dear Lenkielorraine,

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughtful and detailed experience with the Crisp Leaf Spirea! It’s wonderful to hear how well they’ve thrived in your Michigan garden and that you’ve found them so easy to care for—especially across such diverse climates. Dividing them every few years is a great way to keep that dense, healthy growth going strong. We truly appreciate you mentioning how the plants flourish with more frequent feeding in warmer zones; that tip about promoting multiple flushes of blooms down south will be very helpful for others growing them in zone 9.

As you bring the chartreuse leaf and dark green varieties to your Florida homes, you might consider incorporating mulch around the base to help maintain the moist but well-drained soil they prefer. Also, periodic watering during dry spells will support repeated bloom cycles in your warmer climates while keeping conditions just right—never soggy, of course! If you ever want specific fertilizer recommendations or seasonal pruning techniques tailored to your zone transitions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

We’re delighted to hear your love for this versatile shrub and hope your gardens continue to flourish beautifully in all three locations!

Wishing you happy planting,
The Nature Hills Plant Experts
