Spiderwort - Blue Denim
Spiderwort Blue Denim, Tradescantia 'Blue Denim', is a long-blooming selection of spiderwort with true blue flowers, the color of its namesake. Each 1-2" wide, 3-petaled flower only lasts for one day, but the plants have lots of buds, extending the bloom time up to eight weeks.
The flowers are self-cleaning, so deadheading is not necessary. The clean grey-green foliage looks great all summer long, unlike many other varieties which need to be cut back by early summer.
This variety of tradescantia has a nice clumping habit that usually does not need to be staked. Tradescantia ‘Blue Denim’ should be planted in a sunny area, tolerating some morning shade with well-drained soil. It will tolerate damp soil; should not be over watered.
Tradescantia is adaptable to many types of soil as long as it is moist and well-drained. In full sun, plants must be kept moist to prevent scorching. Plants will have nicer foliage, though perhaps fewer flowers, in partial to full shade.
This clump-forming perennial is easy to divide in either the spring or in early fall. With its true blue flowers, ‘Blue Denim’ is very attractive when planted in a naturalized area or by a pond or stream.
