Red Maple - October Glory

Fast-Growing with Long-Lasting Color

This Red Maple (Acer rubrum October Glory) is known for its rapid growth and enduring fall color. In fact, its “October Glory” display of orange-red leaves lasts far longer than many other Maples.

For several weeks you will be treated to one of the most vibrant displays of any tree in your neighborhood. It would look spectacular in your yard as a central focus, or equally at home near other plantings due to its narrow, upward growth.

October Glory is one of the most popular Maples for many reasons. Tiny spots of fiery red flower clusters appear on the bare branches in the spring while the rest of your yard is still muted in browns and greys.

The birds will flock to the small, elongated red fruits that accompany the flowers. Glossy green leaves will appear next, some slightly tinted with a reddish hue. As summer progresses, your Maple will grow 2 feet or more, achieving an oval-rounded form for optimal shade.

The October Glory can reach heights of 50' tall and 40' wide. It’s far more tolerant of some soil and weather conditions than other Maples, and forgiving of a neglectful nature.

For a carefree, rapid-growth Maple of vibrant color you can’t do better than the October Glory.

My son-in-law inquired about the orange-red leaves on our tree. I told him it was an October glory. He has planted one in the front and back yard of his new home. Hope he has the same results, mine is beautiful!

I planted this tree last year. It grew vwey well thru the summer, and came back in the spring with lots of new growth. Now, it seems to be dying. Leaves turning red, or just falling off, some branches are starting to get bare. What can I do?

NHN Response: Please post your question in our community http://naturehills.com/gardening/. WHERE S THE RED??? Review by LORI

MY OCTOBER GLORY RED MAPLE IS BEAUTIFUL. IT HAS THICK GREEN FOILAGE. I HAD IT PLANTED 2 YEARS AGO AND HAVE YET TO SEE RED FOILAGE. ANYONE ELSE HAVE THIS PROBLEM?

Answer from Nature Hills: October Glory Red Maple trees are excellent for intense fall color and have a medium to fast growth rate. It tends to hold its lustrous dark green leaves late into fall. The intensity of the brilliant orange to red fall color is worth the wait.

Besides being a hardy, medium to fast growing shade tree, this tree is excellent for fall color. In most years the fall color which starts in early to mid october and lasts into mid november is about the brightest red that you will ever see. Its so bright that it almost hurts your eyes! The color starts changing to a dull maroon color and you might be fooled into thinking the color will stay dull, but wait about another week or two and you will see the leaves turn to a very bright red color. I have actually had some people stop at my house and ask me what kind of tree this was. The color is that spectactular. I have 3 of these trees and they have always turned bright red with a little orange mixed in sometimes. I have never seen them turn yellow. I dont know how warmer or colder climates will affect the fall color but where I live in zone 7 the color has always been fantastic!

We planted our tree over five years ago and I have yet to see the beautiful color that describes this tree. I admit that it does hold its leaves until late fall, but I havent seen the brilliant color that we were looking for. Can anyone suggest a solution to get this color in the fall?
