Reaching New Heights - The Easy Elegance® Collection adds a Climber

By: Elisabeth Ginsburg

Easy Elegance®, the rose collection that is changing the way Americans grow roses, has introduced its first climber. ‘Showtime’ can grow to be up to eight feet tall, and sports vivid red blooms that are sure to stop traffic and draw compliments. With its old-fashioned single flowers and new-fangled hardiness and disease resistance, ‘Showtime’ combines the best of old and new. Available beginning in the spring of 2007, the vibrant climber is one of five new members of Bailey Nurseries’ Easy Elegance® family. Its 2007 classmates are equally impressive.

Fans of striped roses will delight in the lush profile and gorgeous colors of ‘Fiesta’. The petals are adorned with alternating stripes of dark pink and white, kissed by a bit of yellow at the flowers’ centers. A single ‘Fiesta’ shrub would be a striking specimen; a group would lend a festive ambience to any home landscape. With a recurring cycle of bloom, ‘Fiesta™ will not only get the party started—it will keep it going throughout the growing season.
Another full-flowered, non-stop bloomer is the brand new ‘Sweet Fragrance’. The flowers, which appear orange-coral in bud, and open to reveal luscious salmon-pink petals, practically demand to be cut and arranged. The long, strong canes make it easy, and the flowers’ classic Hybrid Tea shape create a memorable effect. The delectable fragrance is an added bonus. Like other roses in the Easy Elegance® line, ‘Sweet Fragrance’ can be grown in the garden or in a large container on the deck or patio.

Yellow Brick Road
Gardeners know that even the most beautiful yellow-flowered rose varieties have a major flaw—susceptibility to black spot disease. Now, fabled breeder Ping Lim has given yellow rose fanciers reason for rejoicing. ‘Yellow Brick Road’, with its many-petaled blooms in shades of lemon yellow, is as resistant to black spot as it is irresistible to onlookers. Use ‘Yellow Brick Road’ in a hot colored bed, or position several in a blue and white border. No matter how you use it, the shrub’s beauty, compact size and sturdy constitution will make it a hit.

A great white rose is as rare as a black spot-free yellow one, and Bailey Nurseries’ new ‘Snowdrift’ is truly a great white rose. Each cupped flower contains up to fifty cream-colored petals with a whisper of apricot at the center. ‘Snowdrift’ is an English-style rose that will remind you of cottage gardens and romantic old-fashioned bouquets. At three to four feet tall, this snowy charmer could be easily planted en masse to form a stunning, repeat-blooming hedge.

Many of the Easy Elegance® roses work well in pots, but one of the newest, ‘Pink Pearls’ is especially suitable for that use. ‘Pink Pearls’ combines small stature with a tight growth habit for maximum impact in a confined space. The small, frilly flowers are pink with white “eyes” and appealing golden stamens. Flank an entryway with pots of ‘Pink Pearls’ or use them to define a special bed or border. They will bloom all season long with minimal care. Like all Easy Elegance® roses they grow on their own roots, making these “pearls” a very good investment.
