Pussy Willow with Fuzzy, Black Catkins

Black Pussy Willow is a fast-growing shrub with unique, ornamental features.  Plant in a low area of your yard, or anywhere you have moist soils unsuitable for other plants.

Your Black Pussy Willow is most prized for its adorable black catkins, but you’ll also value it for its dark stems that will add color to your drab winter landscape.  It also has the hardy ability to thrive where other shrubs falter.

One of the most beloved plants for its delightfully fuzzy catkins, your Black Pussy Willow flowers form along the stems of the plant each spring.  The procession of black catkins resembles little black, half to two-inch caterpillars.

The durable, soft catkins start small early in the season, then lengthen and change color as they mature. The female catkins stay flat black until well-expanded, but males will add a fine-textured, silky red/orange staminate haze to their display.

The nearly toothless foliage on your Black Pussy Willow has a two-toned appeal.  The upper surface of the leaves is deep green, while the lower is a soft, gray-green. The leaves often take on a uncommon tattered appearance by fall and occasionally produce a display of yellow color for autumn.

Black Pussy Willow is a quick-growing shrub that will spread aggressively by underground roots and above ground suckers.  You’ll likely want to give it free rein, but you can easily prune it back to keep it in check.

Although it does not like standing water, the Black Pussy Willow does like to have water nearby. It is quite tolerant of many soil types as well as moderate road salt and pollution exposure.

Your Black Pussy Willow is clearly an exceptional plant for your yard.  The branches, along with the catkins, can make elegant and divine bouquets for indoors as well.  Its presence in your yard will be no less endearing.
