The Weeping Cherry tree, Prunus subhirtelia 'Pendula Plena Rosea', has a medium growth rate for its arching vertical growth, but a rapid growth rate for its many weeping stems. The Higgins Weeping Cherry tree prefers moist, well-drained soils of average fertility in full sun, but is adaptable to poor soils, compacted soils, dry soils, and heat. It is a specimen tree with single trunk. This deciduous tree has branches that are strongly weeping in form. Heavy flowering in spring lasts one week. Bronzy-brown bark is smooth and attractive.

Fall color is a mixture of green, chartreuse, and yellow. It is a sought after accent tree in late winter or early spring, with its showy pink flowers that emerge before the foliage emerges on pendulous branches. If desired, stems that weep to the ground can be pruned up to a desired height (either staggered in height for informality, or clipped to precisely the same height for formality) so that mowing, growth of other ornamentals, or maintenance access can be achieved underneath the tree.

The reason why I rated the tree poor,is because I planted one back in june and it was doin fine for about a month you know it had new green leaves and small branches and then one day i notice it was turning brown well now its completely brown.But the branches are still there and the leaves too.So one day i took a knive and scratch the tree and found that is still green inside.

I rate the Weeping Cherry Excellent !! I planted one last year (in a very heavy clay area mind you ) of the yard, watered it very well for at least the first two weeks and it was spectacular this spring!!! It flowered heavily and right now the branches are heavy with dark green foliage and touching the ground !! I couldnt have had better luck, or a more easy time planted a tree. It is planted where it receives full sun until mid afternoon , then gets relief in the shade for the rest of the day.

Recieved a weeping Cherry tree as a wedding gift almost 4 years ago, planted it in Oct. 2001 and it is growing like crazy. Every year it gets bigger and better looking. Everyone who sees it front our street makes a point of stopping and commenting on how beautiful it is and how much is a changed the look of our front yard.

I have always had one at all my homes. The last one I just planted a year ago and it was doing fine until I pruned it in a real hot spell this year. After 2 weeks all the leaves got yellow and fell off later. The trunk was still green inside and about 2 months later some of the foliage began to grow again, but not fully on all branches. Does anyone out there know why it lost all its leaves....help. Paul

Answer from Nature Hills: The tree is most likely in shock. Plants can only deal with keeping themselves cool when it is over 85 degrees, just let them be and water regularly.

how do you care for a weeping cherry & when is the best time to prune?

Answer from Nature Hills: Prune in late winter and remove the three “D’s” dead, diseased or dying, and any branches that would be touching or rubbing against each other.

I planted a tree bought online in a pot to get the roots established then moved it to the ground a couple of monthes later. It has not grown an inch since planting it in the ground. What could be the problem?

Answer from Nature Hills: I can think of 2 reasons. The first, being transferred from a pot and then adjusting to a new location will inhibit growth. The roots usually spend the first year in a new location just establishing themselves and therefore top growth is limited. The second reason may be due to root balling. The roots may be slow to leave the area they had established in the pot. After the root system is more established plant growth should follow.

the tree has not flowered for the last 2years . what needs to be done to make it flower next spring?

Answer from Nature Hills: If there was a late frost and the blossom development was frosted or frozen you will not have flowers that year.

Beautiful tree, but I am wondering about root spread. Slow/Rapid? And how far from driveways sidewalks to plant to prevent disruption of the concrete? Would like to plant a few more.

Most small ornamentals like Weeping Cherry do not have an agressive root system. I would suggest you stay about 8 to 10 feet from your sidewalks. The root system of all plants extends well beyond the canopy of the plant in their search for moisture.

My tree has been growing for about 5 years and has not grown more than 4 ft. I want to replant it to another place in my yard, when is a good time to replant?

Answer from Nature Hills: Plants are best transplanted in early spring after the ground thaws and before the buds on the tree or shrub begin to swell or in the fall after leaf drop and before the ground freezes.

I bought 3 of these trees over 2 years ago and they have yet to bloom. They are however growing full and wide with leaves and the trunks are 4X thicker. Is there a fertilizer or something I can get for it. I know we had a wicked late frost this year. Can I protect it next year with some gardening trick. Please help me I am dying to see these things in bloom. MS

I live in a suberban neighborhood at the bottom of a large hill. On the top is a mansion and to the right of it is a weeping cherry. Eastern Redbuds are very beautiful but its like looking at a weeping eastern redbud which is unbelievable. I look at this tree and I think I cannot look at a more beautiful tree than a Weeping Cherry.

i planted my weeping cherry mothers day of 2006, as a small tree. it didnt bloom that summer, but grew some. but this spring i got many wonderful, flowers. i cut it back in the fall last year.

My son had one five years old and it was just beautiful touching the ground.The pink is the best.Older son has white and it is not as pretty as pink so have planted a pink and cant wait till next year. 6/14/07

We originally planted our weeping cherry in the center of the circular driveway making it the focal point we knew it would become. It's now 23 years later and the tree has been nothing but wonderful. Cars stop just to view it in all it's glory. I have always kept a good amount of mulch underneath and well waterered, as it sits in the middle of the front lawn. The sun hit's from ealry morning till at least 5:00 PM. The lawn sprinklers keep it well watered and We keep it lit up No matter the season, it's amazing to gaze upon. The diameter of the trunk is atleast 30 inches round. I have noticed that this year, the leaves are less abundent then I have ever seen before. I am concerned and would anyone who might have some idea as to why this is happening. This current spring gave us a good amount of pink flowers, but the long green leaves which normally follow are just not there. I have checked for catterpillars and other pest, but that dose not seem to be the problem. Are there some chemical stimulants which I can provide the tree with in order to get it popping again. MY WEEPING CHERRY TREE IS ALMOST 3 YEARS OLD AND SEEMS TO BE DOING FINE. I AM HEARING FROM NURSERY'S AND PEOPLE HERE THAT AFTER THE AGE OF 3 SOMETHING HAPPENS TO THEM HERE IN THE CHARLESTON, SC AREA?? BUT I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIND OUT ANY INFORMATION ON IT? I HAVE PUT A LOT INTO MY TREE AN WANT TO SEE IT NOT TURN INTO THE BEAUTIFUL TREE THAT I KNOW IT CAN BE. IF YOU KNOW WHAT MIGHT ME HAPPENING TO THEM HERE PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I received one of these as a weeding gift and I'm trying to figure out where to plant it. Does anyone know how invasive the root sytem is?

Answer from Nature Hills: The Weeping Cherry does not have an aggressive root system. If you are concerned about a septic system or drain field, you can plant the tree a 15 feet or so away from these areas and you should not have any problems.
