The Tulip Poplar tree, Liriodendron tulipifera, also known as Yellow poplar or Tuliptree, is nature’s masterpiece with beautiful tulip like flowers and very fast growing. The Tulip Poplar is a fast growing large shade tree that can grow 15 to 20’ over a 6 to 8 year period. As a specimen tree on a large property it has great beauty, and in the fall can be spectacular.

This deciduous tree has moderate water requirements and has a moderate tolerance for salt and alkali soils. It has masses of tulip-like flowers in the spring. The lovely little tulip-shaped flowers are greenish-yellow with an orange band. Leaves are deep green and turn a blazing golden yellow in fall. It is a wonderful shade tree, hardy and is highly resistant to insects and diseases.

We absolutely loved this tree when we lived in Lexington, Kentucky. The flowers are beautiful and last a long time on the tree. The tree was our swinging tree and the kids wanted us to bring the tree with us when we moved. We highly recommend it. We now live in Utah and will give it a try in the irrigated desert.

Our first exposure to the Tuliptree was Chester Co.,PA.which we discovered first on our daily walks down our little country road. We wondered what tree the unusual flowers all over the road were from, looked around and discovered the towering and beautiful Tuliptree. The flowers were hard to see in the tree because it was so tall; a giant of trees surrounded by giants. From then on we never failed to note this beauty as we passed down the road.Glorius in the fall, always stately. I believe that both George Washington and Thomas Jefferson planted Tuliptrees on their grounds. Just beware, though, these are really soaring tremendously tall trees. Definately worth it if you have the room.

This tree is great. Planted at 2ft tall in my parents backyard 2yrs ago. The tree is now slightly over 6ft tall. Nice straight tree that will fill in any space really quick.

They are big, 5/17/2007 12:13:36 AM

I had to laugh when I was reading the other reviews. My Tulip Poplars that are quite old are huge. I have probably about 10 Tulip poplar trees in my yard and again they are huge. I think they are probably 100 - 150 feet tall. When people come to visit they are amazed at the size. We cut down some a few years ago (about 8 of them). They are brittle trees and can snap in bad storms. Dont plant them too close to your house.

Best tree for fast shade, 6/25/2008 7:35:15 PM

This is a great, fast growing shade tree, a wonderful choice for a large bare yard. After our house was built, there were no trees around in our yard. Planted 3 Tulip trees 7-8 years ago, and they are now about 25' tall, and have nice, dense shade. One of the last trees in our yard for full foliage in the spring, and one of the last to lose its leaves in the fall. I have never found this tree to be messy in any way. I would love to plant 2 or 3 more. We have been told by other nurseries in our area that this tree will not grow in our zone (4/5), and that is why they don't carry them. Well, we have 3 beautiful Tulip trees now, so I guess we will have to order them to get the rest. You will not be disappointed with this tree.
