The Spirea 'Tor', Spiraea betuliflia 'Tor', is a compact spirea reaching a height and width of 2-3 ft. Its tiny white flower clusters are set against a backdrop of deep green leaves that are almost iridescent in the summer. Foliage turns a deep, purplish-red in the fall. The flowers are attractive to butterflies.

Light shearing will encourage repeat bloom. Tor blooms on new wood, so pruning in late winter or early spring is recommended. Because of its small size and excellent attributes, Tor spirea makes a great foundation shrub.

I trialled this plant in my landscape designs around 8 years ago when it first become commercially available. I love this plant. The leaves have a bluish cast and are larger than other spireas with a unique shape. It is stunning in the mixed border because so many perennials look wonderful next to this color and form. Like all spireas, this is a trouble-free and reliabe performer that adds a distinct foliage color and is best used as a specimen.
