The Shademaster Honey Locust tree, Gleditsia triacanthos inermis, 'Shademaster'Honeylocust, may also be called sweet-locust or thorny-locust. This deciduous tree is a moderately fast growing tree commonly found on moist bottom lands or limestone soils. Because it has proven very hardy and tolerant of drought and salinity, it is widely planted for windbreaks and soil erosion control.

It is a fast growing tree with good trunk. It has a more or less rectangular outline formed by the upright ascending branches which then spread horizontally. Excellent street and lawn tree bcause it is thornless and seedless. The dark green foliage turns yellow for great fall color. This variety has been planted to replace the elm in many urban areas. The leaves are fine textured, medium green in color and seldom need raking because of their fine texture.

I have been a tree planter all my life and without a doubt this tree is on the top of my list. Generally disease free, doesnt break up with wind and is a good grower. I plant one in each location I move to for future generations. It is a beautiful tree; looks lacy with its small leaves. Easy to care for.

I have had problems with the leaves turning yellow the latter part of June each year. They tend to dry up from the beautiful green texture and fall off especially the latter part of July and later.

We live on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies. It is very dry here. This tree is my favorite tree (of the several we had planted when we landscaped). It is fast-growing, hardy (stands up to hot temps, high winds) and provides excellent shade. It is also the easiest tree for us to maintain - prune lower hanging branches and fertilize once a year. I can't think of any negatives, except that we only have one.
