The Barberry bush or RedLeaf Japanese bush, Berberis thunbergii, is a deciduous shrub reaching up to 24" tall and about 30" wide. The branches are slender, spiny, and small, and the leaves are roundly oval in a deep red to purple color. The small, yellow flowers borne beneath leaves, from April to May, are not showy. Bright red berries can be found along stems from late fall through winter. Ironically, this is never really considered a feature of this plant.

Barberry bushes are best located in full sun. This plant is tolerant of many types of soil, but will not do well in wet to very moist soils. As name Barberry implies, this makes an excellent hedge or filler shrub.

I just wish my landscaper had told me about all of the incredibly sharp thorns this bush has. I constantly worry about one of my small children fall into it or grabbing. My son was walking by it and just brushed his hand against it, and got a thorn that we cant get out. It looks nice, though.

excellent natural 'barrier fence', 9/4/2007 7:29:33 AM

Barberry by nature is extremely thorny, so any cultivar makes a great boundary marker/ privacy hedge. If you have an area that needs a deterent to trespassers tis is the plant for you. No one will try and penetreate it and you get the bonus of it being extrememly beautiful. Better than an ugly fence (or even barbed wire in commercial applications). Another bonus is that it is a wonderful shrub for small birds. They love the fact that bigger predators gannot get to them. Lovely color in the garden. caveat, there are some states that now prohibit this plant. Also, because it is so thorny you may wnt to plant carefully, as you will have a heck of a time removing after it is mature. Small on space, try a dwarf variety
