The Quaking Aspen tree, Poplus tremuloides, is the most widely distributed tree in North America. It is known by many common names: trembling aspen, golden aspen, mountain aspen. This deciduous tree grows on many soil types, especially sandy and gravelly slopes, and it is quick to pioneer disturbed sites where there is disturbed soil. Quaking Aspen trees are fast growing and very hardy.

Ambient Aspen

I was first introduced to this tree in Colorado in the wild. It was early fall and the leaves were turning a beautiful yellow-gold. What was so stunning was in the quiet of the mountains, the leaves sounded like they were made of aluminum foil when the wind blew. That sound will be forever etched in my mind. What a beautiful tree!

Quaking Aspen

I like others fell for the Aspen many years ago while visiting Colorado in the Fall. We planted our tree last year and today it is well over 10 feet tall and the leaves flutter in the wind making it just like being in Colorado except for the high temps and humidity.I was not sure about the Aspen and Iowa weather but so far so good. Waiting for this Fall and hopefully the changing of leaf color to golden (almost like a Iowa Hawkeye) color.

Aspen problems
Reviewer: Peaches1, 10/19/2007 10:10:30 AM
I too love the Aspen and they are lovely but mine are 15 years old and I am losing them to scale and so I will not put them in my yard anymore. I have to spray them and put systemic around them in the spring. I have lost 2 so far and probably another two next spring.
