The Pink Tatarian Honeysuckle, Lonicera tatarica, originated in Southern Russia and Turkistan. Tatarian Honeysuckle is a tolerant, reliable shrub with good flowering and fruiting habits. It grows in sun or partial shade and any garden soil. The fragrant pink flowers are produced in mid-spring.

The red, orange or yellow fruit is most ornamental during the summer. Fruit and flower colors vary with the cultivar. Tartarian Honeysuckle is widely distributed throughout the US. Neat appearing shrub for screens and windbreaks. Dependable and hardy. Pale pink buds open to masses of white blooms.

A Pink Tatarian Honeysuckle had been planted at the back of my garden before I moved in. It is one of the prides of my garden, needing no care, not even summer watering. It is about 8x8, and in April gets COVERED in beautiful pale pink blooms. Only needs pruning to shape it.

The Tatarian is not native to North America and is considered an invasive species. The following excerpt is from the Ohio DNR web site: "These vigorous shrubs shade out native vegetation, particularly in the woodland understory. They are able to out-compete native wildflowers for light and other resources. Bush honeysuckles green up earlier in the spring than most other plants, giving them an advantage over other species. Each produces abundant amounts of seed which are spread by birds and other animals." Instead chose Americana, Flava or Sempervirens variety.

This plant (and its cousins) is extremely invasive and is wreaking havok on the natural ecology in urban and suburban woodlands all across the eastern US. Many places are taking steps and spending money to eradicate this plant. Please do not buy this bush, and if you already have some, remove them. There are good native alternatives that are not invasive.
